The Slim Jim - Leatherman Juice S2 mod
on: March 24, 2013, 11:56:45 PM
Since I cracked the Juici Code, I got around to making a super slim tool, mean while waiting for some new scales to be printed.

I started with a Juice S2, which I find is very useful for MY needs (YMMV) but I really wanted a pocket clip, and I didn't want that silly can/bottle opener. After taking it apart, looking at how it could be reassembled, the potential for a super slim tool was very high.

I present The Slim Jim!

Sometimes what you need is a good pair of scissors and what you can't cut with scissors, you can cut with a knife.

Lets go inside..

I took the medium flat driver and made into a very sharp concave cutting edge awl. The small driver for glasses and the big flat driver as is. The Phillips is also a key feature as I can adapt the bit driver thingy and use Robbie bits.

The Slim Jim makes the Wave seem fat.

and The Slim Jim next to it's closest cousin, the Leatherman Side Clip.

and the Slim Jim next to the interm-ly assembled Smoothie.

Where is the pocket clip from? A cheap Sanrenmu 704 knife. It's actually cheaper to buy a whole knife with clip than it is to buy a clip. Crazy.

Anyways, here's how I attached it so it wouldn't rotate.

On the right you will see a VERY shallow channel was milled off so the clip would nest into it, preventing rotation

Ok, you're shaming me into working on my S2 tonight!  I hate the unevenness as well.  I want to replace both the blade and scissors though with SAK parts.  Well really I think I want to replace all the parts with SAK parts but keep the frame.  I might even get fancy and make Ti scales and beat Bob to finished a juice Ti mod. :D

What's the weight on this?

You have my curiosity peaked. Some time back, in a 'if you could make your own special series tool' kind of thread, I described an S2 with annoying can opener removed. And here it is. Nice.

It's marginally lighter since the scales are missing.

The pivots are the key to this mod, but also cracking the Juici Code...

Beautiful tool! I am looking to buy my mom a multitool and if I could that would be perfect for her. One problem though, skeleton scales would let in a lot of gook if she had it in her purse. Lets just say her purse may or may not be the cleanest.

you know, I've never been a huge fan of the Juice line, but your recent mods have me reconsidering... I'm really liking the skeleton scales (scale-less?) look.  :)  beautiful work, as always!

I am still not convinced the blade shape is the best, but it's always a compromise when it's a MT.

I am going back to my roots as a designer and looking at MTs from te ground up, seeing if they could be done better. I am working my way up to designing TTi like scales for the Surge.

Out of curiosity, if you ceracoated the skeletonized frame, would it remain within tolerances for reassembly?

Very likely. There will be some rubbing but the tension is based on those springs which doesn't effect the frame at all.

Eric has removing the scales from your nudie juices led to any feeling of a loss of rigidity in the tools   .

Not even a little bit. The aluminum scales are paper thin, maybe 1/32" thick. They are as good as paint for rigidity.

The Slim Jim Polycarb Laser Cut
Reply #22 on: March 28, 2013, 05:22:51 PM
Slim Jim's got some new clothes!

I needed to see if I made a grave mistake with the stainless scales that I orders. Indeed I did, the width of the scales will be a little narrow for the back spring rest/tabs to work. No matter, they can be millled off and redesigned for later.

I exported the profile to DWG and edited all the extra lines out and laser cut them out of 1/8" polycarb. They are kind of neat and remind me of that yellow prototype Juice that is loose.

It's not so slim any longer, but I couldn't find any 1/16" laying around the shop. I also counter bored the pivots so the screw head would seat better.

The best part about laser cutting plastic is that the edges are polished from the heat, because of that, I could precisely position and tension the pivots so that plenty of the pivot itself is set inside the scale for maximum strength!

Now we wait for the stainless scales from Shapeways. I have a nice plan of attack now.

Any difficulty reaching the nail nicks with the greater recess distance from the scales?

Also... I like the look of the polycarb scales. I think the thinner stock would have been more to my liking, but as this seems to be more of just a test, no real complaints.

It's not thy sturdy, but it doesn't need to be. It's the outside layer that is ancillary to the function. Ideally this would be made from shatter resistant, glass fiber filled nylon but you can't laser cut that, just injection mould it.

too complicated to get done...MAYBE..I just got access to a CNC mill and a couple of guys here want to work on a folder. I maybe able to learn how to operate and get 'er done. For now I'll stick to 3d printing and additive material processes (unlike CNC which is material removal)

I think the polycarb is a hot look too actually.  Redo them in 1/16 inch and I think that's a winner.
