Collins double bit
on: May 10, 2013, 09:06:34 PM
Picked up a Collins double bit last weekend at the flea market. It was a bit rusty and has some small chipping on the edge i can smooth out with a little elbow grease.  The heel and toe both look like there is alot more life this ole axe can give. Shame not to give it another run.

I think the style is western but i could be wrong. Think i'll head over to the hardware store tomorrow and pick up a handle for it.  What do ya'll think would be the best way to smooth the edges and chipping away?

I love double bit axes
I guess you have seen the long axe video here?

http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,30096.0.html

I would just use a normal file (might be called a mill file where you are?  )

A very nice man called David sent this over to live with me a while ago  :salute:

That is a cracking looking axe Pacu. :tu:  I would really like a double bit axe, but I would be the first to say I have no actual use for one. :D

Labrys (λάβρυς in Greek, lábrys) is the term for a symmetrical doubleheaded axe originally from Crete in Greece, one of the oldest symbols of Greek civilization; to the Romans, it was known as a bipennis.[1]
The double-bitted axe remains a forestry tool to this day,[2] and the labrys certainly functioned as a tool and hewing axe[3] before it was invested with symbolic function.[4] Labrys symbolism is found in Minoan, Thracian, and Greek religion, mythology, and art, dating from the Middle Bronze Age onwards, and surviving in the Byzantine Empire.

needs a bit more sharpening. I need to invest sometime in a blade/axe sharpening system.

Some wet and dry/emery cloth glued to a flat batten can be useful  :tu:
