"New" little hatchet
on: May 29, 2013, 08:56:52 PM
Well, new to me and with a new lease of life. :)  Head was found at the bottom of Tony's "decapitated axe" box and a little deal was struck.  The head is clearly stamped with the Elwell name and the total weight is around 1lb 73/4oz.

Pulse is in there to add a little scale.

So this is my first go at putting a handle to an axe head so we will see how well it holds up to use.  If it does hold up I might get around to cleaning up the scratches I've left in the handle from the head fitting. ;)

Little? :P

I thought you found one of those tiny ax heads. :D Looks like a good tool. :tu: Don't go throwing it around though.  ;)

Trust me, I know who mounted it, it'll not be thrown anywhere. :D

Compared to a 'standard' hatchet this one is definitely on the lighter side.  My cheap hatchet weights in at 1lb 15oz (890gm) with this lighter chap weighting in at 1lb 73/4oz (675gm).  Might not sound a lot, but it is very noticeable in the hand. :)

This little guy got a good workout a couple of weeks ago doing some cutting and splitting for fire prep.  Worked well enough, though I think I can improve on the edge angle.  Happily the head stayed exactly where it was and didn't develop any wobble (yet ;)).

I took it to the point where the head is clean and smooth, but not quite 'bright'.  This little guy good a good workout a few weeks back on a short hiking trip as detailed here; http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,48214.msg856343.html#msg856343
