  • I may get older but I refuse to grow up.
Weekend project. :D Took me 3 days with waiting for the sheath to dry after the molding. Actual work took about 2-3 hours.

I love the Spirit but never liked the supplied sheath. I'm more of a horizontal carry kind of guy so I decided to try and make a better one. I got a bunch of scrap leather from a friend who works in the shoe industry so the project didn't cost me a cent. :D I started out just to see what I could make, all of it was made without any templates or measuring as it was meant as a prototype for a better one. But it did turn out quite good if I do say that myself.  The stitches are a bit uneven and one of the the belt loops isn't perfectly parallel to the other cause I didn't make the same amount of stitches on both sides (12/13) so the stitches pulled them to the left  but I can live with that. Next one will be better.

I decided to use the friction retention method (don't know how to call it, my English is failing me here) to hold the flap closed cause I don't like velcro all that much and this looked much more appropriate to me. The sheath holds the Spirit tightly as is and it wouldn't fall out even without the flap.

But enough of the talk. Here are some pictures. :D

  • I'm not all bad, I'm just drawn that way.
Very nice - leather looks tough enough and soft too :tu:

I love making little bits out of leather, smells good :)

Thanks. :salute:

The only tools used for this were a couple of vices to hold the mold in place when it was drying, a Wenger SI blade for cutting and awl for making holes for the thread, and a Wenger reamer to poke through and stretch the holes when I was stitching.

No pics of the manufacturing process ?

That is a cool sheath. I don't think I'd even know where to start on making something like that. :tu:

Excellent work mate. Have you thought about burnishing the edges? Spit and an old sak scale will give really good results.  If you want to go more up market bees wax polish instead of the spit!

That's the next step I was planing. I'm still not sure if I'm going to do another one soon or keeping this prototype as EDC. I have too many projects planned for the summer. :ahhh

The Spirit sheath got a little brother this morning. :D

I don't like most of the sheaths that come with multitools. Much too bulky. Leatherman sheaths especially. You can fit a Surge in a Wave sheath and still have extra room. ::) The Mini sheath is no exception. So I decided to make one myself again. :D Maybe not the smartest move after a night on the town though. ;)

OK, here are the pics: (I forgot to take progress pics again  )

Some edges still need trimming though.

And some comparison pics with the original LM Mini sheath.

Now the Mini is ready for EDC.

And an update with a new sheath. Well kind of. :P It's a sheath you carry inside your pocket. I riveted a dangler to it and store the sheet inside my pocket that way.

I don't like keyrings, lanyards, ... and while I like danglers, I don't like the feel of them in my hand while using the SAK. So I made a sheath to still use the dangler so the SAK doesn't fall the the bottom of the pocket and is easily reachable. I can remove every SAK or multi from the pics below from the sheath and put it back in without detaching the sheath from my pocket and pulling it out.

So ... the pics. :D

Carrying the Syph007 Urban Pioneer PhD. >:D

There's a bit of room on the sides as I was modeling the sheath after a bigger SAK.

And now a couple of pics of the Vic Spirit sheath (after 11 months of carry) and LM Mini after 10 months. :D

Side by side with the new guy.

I cut of the retention strap as I made it too short on this one and after some months of wear it became loose. So I added a snap closure I had lying around. Much better.

The Mini sheath is perfect as is. :D Just a few wear marks here and there. And most people just thing I'm carrying a Zippo in it anyways. ;)

Nikolas,

That's awesome job!  Just discover this thread, and the new guy looks quite refined with the snap-on button.  Very nice and original!  :tu:
