Leatherman Juicy SAK Concept
on: August 08, 2013, 04:48:45 PM
I'm not allowed to say how I obtained this, but this was indeed a concept tool pitched to the Powers That Be at Leatherman.  It's not a prototype so much as it's a concept.  If there had been any interest, a prototype would have been developed, likely a bit more fancy than this.

On the one hand, this tool isn't that special in that anyone who has a spare Juice and some skill could make one of these in short order.  For me, it's about the back story.  I know for a fact that this was made in the Leatherman factory by a Leatherman designer who thought that a SAK-like Leatherman would be an interesting idea.

While this particular model never went anywhere, you can see that it did indeed plant seeds that eventually became the Leatherman Style, which is basically one half of a Style PS/CS rather than a Juice model.

I've said it before and I'll say it again- multitool evolution is extremely fascinating- in this case this model may not have existed, but if not for this one, would we have the Style today?  I'm not sure anyone could truly answer that question.  :D

So, while it may not be anything special from a built standpoint, this is still one heck of a neat fossil!

That's pretty neat!

I may knock one out if I have time. I wonder about the ergo of the handles. It's quite thin but then again, it's a concept :)

ahh wow, this looks super cool.

I think this might be a future project.  (once I get the nerve to void a warranty)
I don't have the funds to do it so easily.  the warranty is the selling point the wife is happy with
If I can help, let me know

Interesting concept, but aside from the pliers and diamond file, everything on a SAK is way better than the Juice equivalents  :D Maybe that's why they never followed up on it  ;)

Some might consider this to be blasphemy but this is my favorite Leatherman from now on

Post it in the forum. Metro will make a BO version in a few days. :D

Your reputation precedes you, Eric. ;)

It looks much nicer in this better lighting. :tu: But I can't keep wondering what tools they'd have placed on the inside. With the 4 stubby screwdrivers it just seems like a lot of wasted and empty space there when you don't have pliers to fill it. Maybe if they added the large bit driver (same size as the 3 flatheads) on one side and the can opener+mini driver on the other that concept might have gone further.

I agree that the SAKs do it better for the most part but adding something Leathermanie to it might have been more successful.

Who knows where this would have gone and what it would have turned into by the time it got to production?  Look at the ZRex as an example- it started out as nothing more than a section of scrap steel left over after knife blanks were stamped out of it.  By the time it hit production it was vastly different from the original concept.

Now take this one and imagine a similar amount of morphing and this really could have ended up being very different from what we see here.

It sort of did really, and survives today as the Style.  Sort of.  :D

Very cool Grant thanks for sharing.  :tu: I like the tool itself and I would say there is a good chance this sparked or helped in the concept/Design Process of the Style. It looks to be a bit bigger than the Style itself though. Either way I love the story behind it and I can't think of anyone better to have it than you.  :salute:

That actually looks like a tool that'd be very useful to me, finally a SAK-like tool with all the drivers I like to carry. Indeed, it could use some refining, but it's not a concept for nothing, right?

Yeah, it is an amazing concept.  I really do wonder where this one would have gone if Leatherman had decided to run with it.

It's a nice acquisition for sure but I still can't help but see it as half a Juice. I like the Juice line even though the parts aren't as good as Vics. I wish LM would re-release all Juices.

^^ This.
And if you need more drivers you can fit the extension doohickey.
