If I could have found a good deal on one of these I'd have bought one a long time ago, but they are just so damned expensive here. :(

Glad to hear you like yours mate.

Yes, they even run for about $80-90 in the US. + extremely high shipping charges + customs fees.

And I can't find it locally at all. One day, hopefully.

Yes. It does go for quite a price. I am hoping that the prices will go down sooner than later so that more folks can get this and apreciate it for it's absolute wonderfulness !

There's a couple of NIC MP1s on US eBay for $50.00 at the moment (one with free shipping), and I recently won a s'hand one in "excellent" condition from eBay.

Be honest I don't have much fate in Gerber, i need to purchase from a place with good easy return policy just in case.
I am picky on what MT to keep, the two most recent purchases (PowerDuo & Spirit) disappointed me greatly, luckily returning them was a piece of cake.

Any particular reason? Or just leery of Gerbers in general?

Just in general, nothing specific, I hope i am wrong.
Purchase a MP600 from home depot two weeks ago, not bad for the price but didn't like the design too much (comparing to OHT), it did not earn a spot in my collection. It was what i expected, not a disappointment however.

:mail: My first Gerber arrived 5 mins ago, I'd say it already earned a spot in my collection.
I am busy playing with it, leave me a alone.

My observation:
Access: All tools are easy to access from outside except you must open the bit driver half way to pull out the large flat head. Main blade is OHO, but serrated blade has smaller thumb hole that makes very difficult to OHO. Bit driver is also OHO. Locks are easy to disengage with one hand.
Tool load out: Not a large selection of tools but covers the basic, three different types of blade seen a little over the top, I guess most users would be happier to have a scissors or saw in place of serrated blade. The utility blade and prybar are interesting to see to a MT. No can opener!!!
Strength: All tools are beefy, i assume they will perform well in heavy use.
Appearance: The MP1 has a modern trendy sporty look but have not crossed the line into the weird side like many other Gerber tools IMO.
Comfort & ease of use: Very good, a solid tool feel good in hands, no sharp edges or corners anywhere on MP1. Pliers are spring loaded, nice.
Build Quality: Acceptable.
Bulk & weight: 4.25 x 1.5 x 0.8 inch weights 8.7oz, MP1 is not a small or light tool.

The tag line on Gerber site reads: "This might be the greatest multi-tool Gerber has ever made and the last multi-tool you ever need."
I agree to the first part of the statement.

In case you wonder how does it stand up to Leatherman...Knowing I am a Leatherman fan, you know what I am going to say.

Well, base on MP1's size, weight, tool selection & price tag I'd say Leatherman wins.
Wingman / Sidekick are smaller, lighter, has scissors or saw, much cheaper
Rebar is smaller, lighter, bigger tool selection, cheaper but no OHO.
Wave is smaller, lighter, bigger tool selection, cheaper and easier to carry (optional pocket clip)

But the standard bit driver is where MP1 shines, if that is important to you, MP1 it is your choice.

Gerber says MP1 weight 8oz, but my scale says it is 8.7oz.

Hey Kampfer,

Thanks for the feedback mate  any chance of a piccy of the tool and pliers in comparison to the Wave? I don;t think we've had much in the way of comparison pics of this tool yet.

Cheers

I have no Wave. :-[
How about Mini-Surge & Surge? MP1's size fall between the two.

Cheers for  enlightening us all kampfer  on the MP-1's true size....it looks as big as the mighty surge!!
Like you and everyone else has stated, really don't know how Gerber expects to gain any new followers.
Without checking the price, I'm guessing its in the realms of the surge. So how does Gerber seriously expect the MP-1 to win new friends.
Yes, its got cast jaws and a longer screwdriver and is lighter than the surge. BUT the surge pliers, especially the new version are said to be excellent, the MP-1's longer driver can be quickly matched if the surge is fitted with its extension (which I guess could fit into its sheath too along with its bit card!!) As for weight...to me I prefer heft in a tool, it instils confidence.

I'm very intrigued by the MP-1, but the price point and tool loadout doesn't make it an attractive alternative to what's already out there.

Can't wait to get mine though... ;)

You will get whatever is coming to you ;)

Many good points , with that price tag there are better choices out there.
I bought one because it was on sale and I found it interesting, it earned a spot in my collection but it will not earn a spot in my pocket.
