Well Rex, I um had to get a few other things I found interesting on their web site. So I may have saved you money, but in the long run, I cost myself some as well.  :D

Got all 3 Leap colours and a few extras.   :D

Nice one steve.

Other than being ugly as sin, it does appear to be well made.  I still can't say it will be my son's first multi or knife.  My first was a Vic Classic SD that I still have, and I fully plan on giving a Classic SD to my son for his birthday, and I might go with a Squirt PS4 after that.

I have to say my 11 yr old son shares the same sentiment. He and I often go trekking and camping and he currently owns a LM Mini.
How is Leatherman planning to capture youth market with something they consider as uncool (I won't say here what he actually said when he saw the photos), is anyone's guess.  ???

Yea, my boy loves my rebar, and he is only 5.  He wouldnt like the Leap.  When i do think hes ready for a tool, it wont be a neutered one.  If he cant handle a blade then he isnt ready yet.

I can't wait to see what you think of it. If you like it, maybe you can get one for EDC and leave the blade out. :D

I'd probably opt for that bladeless mp600 variant MT (not exactly an ideal size but the way to get used to full sized tools is to use them) for a kid, with a SAK for their first knife. Maybe even a small SAK, but a Swisschamp was my first knife, around.... I don't know, ten or eleven? And even today I have the thing (Swisschamp) up in the cabin. Not sure how much of that is sense vs sentimentality, but I know a decent enough portion of it is just that an SAK is something people don't freak out when they see. I've had a surprising amount of people ask me if my MT was a knife :|.

I've read a lot of comments from people wishing there were a mini MT with scissors.

Well, here it is. It has everything but a file and a can opener.

Just because it's marketed for kids doesn't mean grownups can't use it.  :pok: :D

Well here's what LM could have done and kept everybody happy, well me anyway.  An Orange Knifeless Fuse, maybe with a saw instead of a file?   Then when ready for a blade,  upgrade.

Thanks for getting one and letting us know what you think Steve :salute:  I must say I'm a bit surprised you like it.  I really expected a somewhat negative review based on early impressions in this thread.  Who knows, maybe I'll get one for my older daughter if she's interested.

On the plus side...if they are a US retailer...and are willing to sell to use pesky northerners, that is a win win in my books right there. Think I may have to peruse them more often in the future.

sawman...not sure about that. I still have my knifeless Fuse...but if I can get along with it, only time will tell. In the least, I will have to try it out when I get it as an EDC.

Okay, I ordered a blue one. Going to try it without the knife. I have a dedicated folder anyway. If I remove the saw I may try to get it thru TSA.

I think the Leap is such a great idea and hats off to Leatherman for this innovation

Like some of you, I was thinking, "Well is this removable blade just a gimmick / really necessary", and, "Well if a child cannot handle a blade, then maybe he should not have a tool at all" etc etc
However on reflection and thinking about my own 5 year old son - I am thinking about getting (and we all know what that means on this forum) a Leap for him for Christmas/next birthday.
He loves tools, when he was tiny always wanted to play with my real tools rather than his toy plastic ones (), and these days frequently borrows my multis to fiddle around with his Lego. So it is just ideal for him. And although he is very sensible, and I have taught him about blades, I would not trust him with a blade for another couple of years.

The other aspect in Australia of course is the legal one.
A child under 16 is not allowed to own a knife.
However as well as the child committing an offence by having a knife, a parent also commits and offence by giving them one. So with the Leap you also stay legal.
Although just between us all here .... ssshhhh .....  of course, he will have the blade installed long before he is 16!!

How is Leatherman planning to capture youth market with something they consider as uncool - I won't say here what he actually said when he saw the photos.

Why do you guys think it's ugly? - I think it's fine, even quite cute!!  - No problems at all in that department.

Looks and appearances are subjective, indeed. For me personally (and my 11yr old) it's unatractive. Sorry but cannot put it any other 'nicer' way.
But that's IMO, and that's me.

So now that someone has one, when shall the torture... irr, testing! I mean testing! When shall it begin?
