My MUT, with scissors
on: October 03, 2013, 10:28:36 PM
Well I was looking at tools I had, and was trying to see what I could replace the carbon scraper and the the punch with, I looked at my Swisscard and wondered if I could stick bits of that in the tool some place.  When I was looking at the scissors, I noticed that they looked to be about the same width as the drivers, so I took one of the long drivers out, and stuck it in.  Guess what, it fit like a glove.   :woohoo:

Now the hole does end up blocking the bottle opener, but that's not a big deal for me.

One nice thing is that the cylinder that stops the bits from falling out also works great for keeping the scissors in place.  (Sorry the pics a little blurry)

I know it's not much, and this has probably been mentioned here before, but I was happy with my discovery so I had to share.  :D

Now to find something useful to me to replace the scraper and punch with.....

I actually don't think I've seen this before, very cool, Derekmac!  :salute:

I actually think the scraper looks like it could be quite useful, and I've seen the punch filed into a small flathead screwdriver...

Hmm, that's not a bad idea Tom. I might either so that or sharpen it to a point. The great thing is you can buy a new one if you mess it up.

Of course, the scraper also has quite a bit of a point, right?

Yeah, but where it's made out of a softer metal, I wouldn't want to put too much pressure on it punching through something.

Hmm, fair enough. You could always get two, they're screw-on, right? One for the flathead and one for the pointy thingy?  :pok:

Thanks for that link Robert! The real Vic scissors slide in no problem though, so no need to remove the plastic part. I do like how he cut the grove to slide the tweezers in though, might have to try that one out.

Well I decided that I wanted to have my tweezers, so I did the tweezers mod!

I used the blade on my TTi to make the marks where the material needed to be removed.

I used the blade and the file to give me the room I needed.

And the end result.  Now to figure out what to do next...

awesome!!!!

The MUT sure has a lot of small pockets and other stuff that make it a modders delight. I want to pick up a few more of them so I can go at it.

I've added Surge scissors and an Awl, but that's it. I also dyed the brown parts black.

I really want to find a way to attach a slingshot to it or attach bands to it so It can become my ultimate bushcraft tool! There is tonnes of space for ferro rods and matched and stuff.

I remember reading your posts of the Surge scissors, but I don't remember the awl.  What did you use for an awl, and how'd you dye the plastic?  I'm not a huge fan of the brown, so I think it being blacked out would look good!

Thanks! They really do fit in there great.

I did find a problem with the tweezers though. Having them in all the way makes it hard to remove the bit when pushing on the holder. I think with just a little more trimming it'll be fine though.

I used some 316 stainless.

I dyed the parts with RIT dye, boiled them for about 30-40 mins.

Not really paid much attention to this thread with it being a MUT, but that's a very clever little trick with those scissors

You know, I would think that the Punch and Bolt Scraper are both prime candidates for a Marlin Spike

So what are you planning to do with a Bolt Scraper made of steel?

Sharpen it and use it as an big awl, that's the only thing still missing!
Or, perhaps something to make changeble saws, that Ahold be great to.
I like a good metalsaw!..

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING!!??!!
I tried to use the mut to snap a little piece of the victorinox siscors.
It scratched the siscors and now the wire cutters of the mut are damaged!!!
I thought you could win a war with this ting?!
It was "the bést there is "?
It was defeated by a pair of siscors!!!!

That sucks. At least you can replace the cutters though. Still surprising none the less.

EDIT: after re reading you post I'm under the impression that it did not even cut the scissors and damaged the 154cm cutters! What part did you try to cut? Any pictures?
