Gerber Multiplier mangling
on: October 11, 2013, 11:41:01 PM
Ok, I´m planning some mods and tool swaps for awhile. I´ll use this as a work-log.

Don´t expect any wonders like you are used too from the fellows posting here regularly and those with more talent with me, but I´ll share my ideas and Progress (and most likely, draewbacks and desasters, too).

I´ll start with a quick and dirty mod.
A MP 600 was harmed in the making of this, so please click reverse if you are easily shocked.

I took my angle grinder to an unsuspecting MP 600 body to  create 2 Gerber wrenches.

This is the outcome:

Not pretty, but makes dismantling and adjusting MP 400 and 600s a breeze.
If anybody is interested, I only need one. I´ll trade one for bar of your favourite chocolate.

But now to modding.
I´m sure I did post those pictures already, but I can not find the thread for the life of me.

I modified a MP 600 to accept the slightly longer, one handed blade out of a defunct Strata.
I cut and filed out an opening to make room for the thumbstud.

The longer blade sits nicely besides the plier head.

Flicks open nicely.

Size comparison

I am not sure about the best layout for my EDC, but I think some of the tools out of the strata might find it´s way into an MP 600 chassis in the future.

These are the tools out of the Strata compared to a standard MP 600 loadout.

I am thinking of replacing the bottle opener / screwdriver with the package opener/ screwdriver one for example.

The long can/bottle opener might be nice in a MP 400, making room for one other tool while not giving up a tool.

I´ll test the long Phillips, too - I fear it´s too thick to slide by the plier head, but we´ll see.

Among the Ideas I have is:

Putting a Bluntnose head, file and Scissors into an MP 600 ST (need a BO bluntnose and scissors, though...)

Putting a 3 D Phillips into a Diesel, together with an Awl and file.

Most likely my EDC MP 600 will be the first to be modified.

I have not done much lately, but I played around a bit, exploring possibilites:

Apart from the obvious (and not new) idea of transplanting the PC Shears into a BO MP 600, I am thinking about modding the Pauls chen to make a MP/PC Crossbreed

The Clip and Outside opening blade are nicee additions, the small plier will have to go and then I´ll have to look what tools should be in there and how they can be forced inside.

For now this is only in teh playing around and planning stage as I want to finish my MP 600 mod and the Wingman with Vic scissors first.

Sopeaking of the MP 600 mod - anybody has an idea who makes decent golders with rather slim blades that might fit into th MP 600 chassis?
Vic 111 blades are too big and 108 ones have not enough material in the pivot area I fear.
I´d love a PE blade which is a little longer than the one on the MP 600, like teh Diesel or MP600ST one, but with a bnicer blade shape and grind.

I´ll check a LM Blast blade as they might fit rather well, but am open to ideas.

Does the MP600 head fit directly in the Paul Chen?  If so I might have to pick one up. :tu:

Thread Necro!

Just wanted to share some minor tweaks to my EDC MP 600.

I added the blade out of a Diesel (Thanks, Kirk!). To have access to the nailnick, I had to swap over the file and the blade.
The blade shape of the diesel is not my favourite, but ok for work and a bit longer than the original MP 600 one.

The other handle lost the lanyard ring and Can opener (both unused)

And I added the Can/bottle opener Combo tool out of an EVO and the small crewdriver / clamshell opener.
To make up for different tool thickness and to make room for the plier head to slide in all the way, I had to use one of th EVO´s thicker washers.

I´m not sure if the combo opener will stay, but I had no other useful tool at hand.

It came standard on this MP 600 - I believe it´s called the Scout. The file has a diamond coated side and the awl is quite good.

It also comes on the Fisherman and a version that has been ID'd as the Sportsman ( http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,25236.0.html )

Mine now resides in my bladeless MP400. :)

I think it will not work well.
The handle on the PC is wider and has no locktabs, so the Clip must be ground slimmer.
The Gerber has one fixed and one screwed pin on the pivot, but the screwed pin is on the right handle side, so the clip has teh wrong form.
I guess a straight, slim clip from a knife will be an easier mod.

As usual, my meager mods don´t deserve a whole thread of their own, so I do a little Zombifying with my own thread...

At last i managed to rearrange the tools in my EDC MP 600 so i can access teh middle tools (awl especially) better.

The nail nicks were blocked off by each other before so you had to fold everything out and fold back what you don´t need.

BTW: Anybody wants to trade the diamond file for a regular one?

And while I was at it, I did repair/improve a Diesel I had. I put in teh 3D Phillips from an MP 600 as I like it better. The file was replaced as the Diesel ones was broken.

To keep Nailnicks accesible I replaced teh big flat driver with teh one out of a MP 600, too.

Other handle load out:

You only loose teh lanyard ring.

Like they belong there...

All standard Diesel Tools, only rearranged:

I had no Issues with the difference (which is minimal) in pivot area size between Diesel and MP 600. Lockup is fine on all tools.

This is the reason it did not stay:

No Bluntnose Version. Accomodating a MP 600 head will destroy the finish as you need to widen the slider openings.
A Paul Chen Shear head will fit perfectly, though. Just for thought.

I think I am looking for an SS Diuesel as a trade, so PM me. I need to mangle on.  ;)
