Detron's Skinth Shield 2XL review
on: October 13, 2013, 06:05:27 AM
OK,  Everyone knows @Metropolicity makes amazing things, and the Skinths are no exception.
So, if you like this, head on over and shop  for the model that fits your needs http://skinthsolutions.com/

I can tell you this is top quality materials, amazing engineering, and superior customer service.
Metro was running a day or so behind and sent me an email to inform me, and even offered me options to be quicker (different color and bonus gift), however I told him no rush, I can wait for the desired color.  letting me know helps me be patient,  and it was only a day or so, so no big deal.

Here is the size of my new skinth

The wonderful belt clip, that actually makes this perfect!  I can take it off to get things I need, and put it back.  I wear a belt I made out of paracord every day that is a little thicker than a standard belt, and this clip fits on my belt just fine, actually it grips the belt, which I like!  I have more in here than I had with my old case, and this seems lighter.

One Side

other side

The top down view with flap open

the contents,  there is still some room left, I plan on adding a pack of damp-resistant matches.
I added a short pencil, since the Compact has a Pen.

The flashlight!!  $1 at the dollar store, LED flashlight and laser pointer!  (I bough 12!)

To fit the bit both bit cards into the front area AND allow the flap to snap, I had to modify my bit kit holders, just shortened them up a little.

Looks great! Now since that's the 2XL and that's what i initially thought i wanted i can see now that the MONDO may be the way to go for me. Hmmmm.

If I loose the extras, I can get a charge and my rebar in there.  on my hip, it does not look big, and at work it does not look like a large tactical pouch.  but I love it.  yes there are other amazing ones that I want, but this is where I started.

it looks very compact but that's the Skinth idea right?  i like the taller Mondo but it appears narrower but not by much.  looks like it sits low on the belt which is great. heck i want to cram way more stuff in haha.  i need to really measure what i want to carry.

The 2XL-Shield
•Main Pocket: LM Charge/Wave/Blast/Crunch/Rebar, Gerber MP400/Flik,  Swiss Spirit, Moleskine XS Volant Notebook.
•Main Pocket:  4″ tall x 3″ wide x .75″ thick (will fit 2×4″ tools side by side (ie Crunch/Wave)
•Internal Tubes: .5″ x 4″ items, AAA flashlights etc

The Mondo-Shield
•Main Pocket: LM Surge/ST300, Gerber BLUNT NOSE MP600, Moleskine XS Volant Notebook.
•Main Pocket: 4.5″ tall x 2.75″ wide x .1″ thick.
•Internal Tubes: .5″ x 4″ items

Nice breakdown,  and good research!
So, yeah, might be a tough decision.
I cannot use mine for a 4.5" tool.  that is important to realize.

however, I love it!!

looks awesome.  the breakdown came from his site.  the extra height is for no reason as the width may make more sense but then again the width may be important. this is where i get confused and need to sit and decide what i want to carry and go from there.  i have his site on stand by at the ready as i look at it often

If you want to Carry the SwissTool, Surge, Supertool 300, or even the Gerber MP600,  you cannot use the 2XL,  you would have to get the Mondo

Looks like a good setup.

Also, you can store something behind the belt clip. There's a hole where the belt clip goes inside the Skinth and as it's riveted at the bottom that leaves you with a nice small pocket. I used to carry a small prybar or a LM Surge diamond file in there.

skinthhhh
(i'm going to have to get me one  :ahhh)

but slightly off topic, I do like the torch/laser  :tu: my stupid dog loves to chase a 'dot' (we have to do it on our nightly walk) she hasn't worked out in 9 years of doing it every night that she isn't going to catch it  (but it does save me a lot of walking)
now i'm going to have to get one of them ! the torch (flashlight) would be handy on night walks, I have been known to forget my EDC torch in the rush to get out
yet again surfing on MTO costs me money ! another 'toy' I have lived successfully without until I knew it existed

Since a fellow member asked for some "Custom load" shots, I figured I might as well post it here.

Current load being unloaded.

items removed from the right side

a space pen and a eyeglass screw driver set.

items removed from the left side

Maglite solitaire and Leatherman bit extender

out of the front pocket is my RAM holder, that holds all the bits from the full leatherman bit kit, except the micro bit.

main pocket has this Charge AL and the camo Duct tape

which contains a Leatherman Croc

hidden inside are a flint steel, large safety pin and an Awl made from a Mut bit

here is how I store the Leatherman Bit kit so if fits inside the front pocket of this Skinth

empty shots, notice how the loop slots can be pushed to the side or back when not in use

Now, as requested, here is the Rebar, Vic Compact, Bit extender, full bit kit (I do not have factory cards, sorry), I do not have the Bit adapter either, but I do have the flashlight , Maglite Solitaire, and I added a space pen.  you will notice the extra room in front of the Rebar.

it closes fine

here I added my Croc

still closes fine

here is the Awl, and I did have the other bit from the MUT bit replacement kit, but I lost it   I liked that long flat phillips combo

Hope this helps

detron, I love what i see.
Question:
Will the pocket for your bit kit fit a iPhone 5?

I have a iphone, Wave, PWII and LD01 I like to fit in a carry pouch.
The Max TC-1 can do so but the the heaviest item (wave) is store in the pocket furthest from body, which makes the weight of the entire pouch much more noticeable.
EDC: Black Talon, Black Cat, Spirit, LD02

not even close,  it is about 2.75" wide, but only 2.5" deep, let it stick out more than .5" or so, and the snaps will not close
