Microbe EDC - Welcome to the dark side
on: October 15, 2013, 09:52:31 PM
So why black? And doesn't it gets boring?
Well, I do have some older gear with actual colors, but I felt like carrying a mishmash of gear, a bit like a Christmas tree out of season. Awkward. In time, once I found a replacement in black, that colored gear ended up in the drawer, only getting used occasionally.
As to all black getting boring, I found that it is not the colors that I like to mix with, it are materials and textures. In the end, black comes in many forms. Smooth warm horn, knurled anodized aluminium, gripping rubber, polished dark chromed steel, textured leathers like Stingray and Ostrich. Even now, with all my current EDC gear almost black, and when I really don't need more gear, I still like more black gear. Ebony wood! Carbon! Crocodile or sharkskin leather! So there you have it. Black. Welcome to the dark side.

Instead of summarizing what gear is in the picture, lets focus at the materials used, Rubber watch and pen, Anodized Aluminium knurled knife and light, polished and dark chromed steel lighter, Ostrich leather phone cover, Stingray leather wallet.
Carrying tools does not need to be boring, with a  variety of materials available, each can have its own feel to it. What materials you guys can suggest me, and what is your favorite?

You like traditional lines right, have you thought of the more upscale models of the classic opinel, in ebony, horn or maybe with damascus steel blades?

http://www.opinel.com/uk/series-limitees/elegant/ndeg08-damas

Or some Black Oxide multitools. You told me once you prefered the look of the Spirit RT over the BO versions but there are other BO tools that you might like. ;)

Maybe a black nylon scaled SAK. I don't think you have any of those, do you?

Also colder weather is coming so a black Buff could come in handy. :vader: (copies are OK ::) but nowhere near original )

And great idea on starting your EDC thread in the Gadget Freak/EDC Forum thread. I was just thinking about that yesterday. :D We're not using this board to it's full potential.

Hi Enki, are you affiliated by the dark side aswel? You seem to have posted some excellent black ideas! You will be happy to know I blacklisted them. (blacklist has a different meaning for me :D) Anyway, as non possessed blacklisted items aren't good for taking pics, here are some items I do have: Leatherman's with some black:

in time, I plan to get the Style Ps, for the cases I need to be knife-less, but I am not in a hurry.

Oh, and about the title of this thread, it is universally known that good designers borrow, and great designers steal. So yeah. I stole the idea. From George Lucas.  :salute:

I made an all black SAK before.  I thought more people would have been interested, but the orange scales with black tools sold way more than all black.

I think blacked out with damascus tools would be sweet.  Someday Im going to make that happen.

Quite a few of those TEC clips. :D I think I like them better than those McGizmo clips. How strong are the gate clips? Might have to buy a few myself. :tu:

I ordered them from the US. With those high shipping costs to Europe, 1 would be silly, so I ordered 5.  :)
edit: so far, none of them came off, unless I took them off.

Some more black in the mail! Black paracord with a white reflective strand weave. I made a new lanyard for my black Alox Farmer, using one of the converted aluminum tire valves. (I drilled a hole trough it) I am very happy with the black and bare metal look.

Sometimes re-purposing is the best thing. I started using a Fallkniven sharpening stone sheath to carry my black Alox SAK knives, as their weak anodizing and my key ring don't play nice.
Turned out to be a perfect match!

Thanks Gareth! They are tiny! Here is a comparison shot with normal key ring clips.

Thanks, I get a $10 shipping quote from the tec site but the clips are out of stock. :-\ I'll need to add a few other things too to make the shipping less noticeable. ;)

Good call Enki! That was exactly what I said to my wife, and I ordered 2 extra Isotope Tritium lanterns  :D

TEC doesn't sell the Tritium vials though, you need to order these elsewhere...

Thanks all for the positive feedback, and for looking.  :)
I've been building up for a quite some time to get my current setup, and at the moment I am happy with the functionality, and with a style I personally enjoy very much.
