Enki's carry thread - Paint it black - well, mostly
on: October 16, 2013, 11:25:03 PM
Microbe started it but I've been thinking we should put this part of the forum too more use so here's my contribution to it. :D

My carry doesn't change that often. Most of the gear you see has been my EDC in true sense of the word for months, even years. Some slight variations do happen of course as I give other toys in my gear arsenal a chance to play or try out some new stuff I bought.

Here's what I had on me today. Seems like a lot but it's divided in different pockets and the multitool of the day gets belt carried anyway. ;) For the last few weeks the usual multi (Vic Spirit X) got replaced by the LM Mini that I carry in my home made belt pouch on my belt at 3 o'clock. Chapstick and lighter (switched from mini BIC back to the IMCO Triplex with windy weather coming) get carried in the fifth/watch pocket.

I have three keyrings (see below), car keys, house keys +kees to grandfathers flat, and work keys. The house keys keyring gets carried all the time of course clipped to the corner of my right front pocket. Next to it come the work keyring, the one with the monkey fist lanyard, and car keys are either in my jacket pocket or in my bag. (I'll post the bag carry in a day or so ;) ) The pen, Zebra Telescopic, in black of course :vader: , I clip to the top of the right front pocket horizontally so it's parallel to the belt. I used to carry it next to the keys vertically but I often pulled it out together with my keys and almost lost it a couple of times. The USB, chewing gum, and self made coin purse are dropped at the bottom of the RF pocket.

The small black tin box is my cigarette tin. I roll my own, and as I hate carrying the filters, paper and tobacco, I roll a few for the day in advance. They don't dry out too much. The tin and a pack of tissues I carry in my left front pocket.

The phone I carry in my bag, jacket or back left pocket. I attached my last of the eClipse clips to it's case so I don't have to worry that it will drop out or that someone might swipe it out of my pocket in a crowd. (I wish I had gotten some more of the eClipse clips :-\ )

The wallet gets carried in the right back pocket, and parallel to it is the SAK of the day, which was the Wenger SI today.

The only major change to my EDC recently was a new wallet. I carried the CC LA leather wallet for years and it has served me well. The only problem I had with it was no place to store cash properly. I used to fold the bills three ways and stick them in one of the outside card slots, but I didn't like the fact I had to show everybody how much cash I had on me every time I paid for something. I searched for a better option for quite some time and found it on eBay from India. Size-wise it's similar to the LA wallet but it has the proper cash pocket, three card slots on one side and a ID window on the other. I've been carrying it for about a month now and like it so far. :tu:

Here are a few pictures of it with the IMCO Triplex for size reference. (Yes, I realise the LA wallet would have been a better size reference  )

Now to the keyrings...

House .... work .... car :D

On the house keyring except the keys I carry my DIY Twistick, an iTP A3 EOS AAA flashlight and the MTO prybar I got from Tofty. All carried on my DIY danger, still going strong after a year of use. Not bad for a simple, inexpensive project. :D

The only addition to the work keys is a simple fauxton.

The car keyring is simple too. I don't like hanging to many heavy stuff on there. Just a Vic Rambler and a Spotlight Speck. I reversed the scales on the Rambler though as I feel they should come this way from the factory, so that when you hang the SAK from your keys, the T&T don't hang upside down. ::)

I realise that I have 3 flashlights, one on each keyring, but I don't always (actually almost never) have all of the keyrings on me. And I find it important to have some source of light on me. I'm weird that way. >:D

And with the coming of longer and darker nights I added a "proper" flashlight that I carry in my jacket. The 47s Quark Tactical in the AA configuration. (might change it to the CR123 tube though or the Zebralight SC51)

Oh, yeah, the watch. It's the Seiko 5 automatic (SNK809K2). I carry it on a leather NATO strap, black with black clasps. :vader:

I'll be adding new stuff to this thread with thoughts on possible new acquisitions, my bag carry, tool combos, some use pictures ...

And don't worry, they won't be this long winded. :P

I'd love to hear your comments on it, likes, dislikes, advice.

And if some of you would like to start their own thread like this, I'd love to see/read it. :hatsoff:

Good idea to put a serious flashlight in rotation

That's a nice system you got going there Enki! Cool stuff! Sure, it touches borderline - I need a bag -  but I guess that how most of us are. Stuffed pockets is probably be the norm round here :)
If I have to nitpick, maybe you should find a black multi-sheath and replace the brown one you got at the moment? + that flashlight that was suggested, sure you got some room left somewhere for that!
Looking forward to see updates in due time!

Thanks for sharing.

@Microbe

The flashlight is already in the jacket, and you can see it in the first pic under the watch. I love the lego-ability of it. :D Same head and tail switch can be used with a variety of different bodies/battery configurations. I have 2xAA, 1xAAA and 1xCR123 bodies for it.

I switched it to the CR123 body today as I use it with a AW RCR123 battery for more output. I'll have to buy some AW 14500 batteries though to keep it AA compatible.

You can see the 47s in the CR123 configuration is very close in size to the Zebralight in AA. I like carrying flashlights with a clicky switch in the jacket, but pocket time is reserved for the twisties. ;)

And the pouch I made myself. There's a link to it in the first post. So I only have to find some black leather. :)

Dang that is a nice custom-able light! Lego light seems a good description.
And a nice Job on the sheath. I wish I was that handy.

Same here (unfortunately). Most of my EDC gear never really changes. Only my knife and/or tool changes every few days or weeks. Boring, I know...

A very good SAK day today. :mail:

I got the package in from the cheap UK SAKs lot. Only took 5 days to arrive. :D

Now I have to fight the urge to order a SwissChamp or WorkChamp. Bargain prices but I know I wouldn't use them.

The front scale is a bit scratched up though, back is fine. :-\ Not a big problem as I plan on switching the scales to black plus ones anyways and at that price I'm still amazed I actually got a Cybertool. :D

And while I'm in macro (using the jewelers loupe actually  ) a nice close up of the shield.

And the package from Thomas/lowtech also arrived today.

A Wenger SS Traveler to replace the red celidor scaled one I've been carrying.

And the Richartz picnic knife.

I think this might get to become a permanent part of my carry as my "clean knife", the knife that I'll use if I want to cut some food stuff. :D

Its built quality is very good.

The knife is kept together by the cutout that you see on the fork. If you open up the blade, the knife is firm, but if you open up the fork, you can slide the two halves apart and use the two as a proper knife and fork set. :2tu: The corkscrew is a 5-turn one so it won't hold the eyeglass screwdriver, but that shouldn't be a requirement for a picnic knife anyways, right? :D

The reverse tang stamp.

And the set ready for use. ;)

I've looked around UK sites and they're not very cheap. Mind if I ask where you got these from?

I'm thinking about the SwissChamp and CyberTool. Are these really original Victorinox Swiss Army Knives?! Not Victolinox Swiss Almy Knives?...
I made a trial order, just to see how much for mail costs. £4 and still got a rebate on the SAKs price.
