The wife and I were shopping one day and we were looking at different types of pasta, and the cooking time, and one of them was 11... we kept saying 11 and laughing our guts out in the middle of the supermarket... everyone musta thought we were crazy...  :D

I love finding false friends, words that sound or are written the same in different languages but mean something completely different.

Like this one. Reading it in german or dutch compared to english. >:D

I think anyone would agree you talk with a much crazier accent than us!

:twak:  What did I say in my post?  I DON'T HAVE AN ACCENT.  In fact, I asked the first 10 customers in the store today if I did.  Eight said no.  One only spoke Spanish and didn't understand what I asked (though his boss thought that was hilarious), and the last said yes.  I think that's what he said at least, he's a transplant from Mobile Alabama and I had a tough time understanding him....   :P

Nice. I'm waiting to here something from the ol' American South.

I've spoken to Ashley on the phone before.  I've actually asked her to repeat herself in English, and she's not that far South.....  ::)
There's no such thing as "Too pretty to carry".  There's only "Too pretty NOT to carry"...... >:D

A note to you: Don't approach a german saying: I have a gift for you.

English: Gift = present

German: Gift = poison

Watched a movie last night: l'auberge Espagnole, in which a French guy talks about going to 'la Fac' (as in, la faculté=the faculty)... I guess you can see where that's going ;)

Funny thing, in Dutch, Gift can mean both present, and poison  :D

German: Kopf = Head

Norwegian: Kopp = Cup

German: Öl = Oil

Norwegian: Øl = Beer

(Yes, ö in German and ø in Norwegian are pronounced pretty much the same.)

Yes, it's an old joke.

I lived in France for four years. I went there having good knowledge of their language, on paper. First thing I knew when I set foot there was I couldn't understand what people were saying to me and even worse, they didn't understand me either. This went on for almost a year. I must tell you that french people can get really sensitive about accents... First, people thought I was Russian (not good), later they thought I was an Arab (occasionally worse than not good), finally they came to think I was Italian (that's OK). No-one ever thought I was Greek.  :(

The fun part is at that time I had made a list of words that shouldn't get confused. An example: laisser = let, lecher = leak with my tongue. The difference a sound can make -"sh" insted of "s"- still amazes me. I heard that mistake being made more than once: leche-moi instead of laisse-moi  :D the worst being a greek friend arguing with her french boyfriend in the train station. She angrily shouted at him "leak me".
Ah, fun times. I'm sure I'll remember some other "forbidden" mistakes.

A while back we got a PhD student from India. At first many of his experiments failed.
We then realized whenever the protocol stated to incubate at room temperature (~20°C) he incubated at 35°C (room temperature in India ;)).
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.
