1) I'm excited to see how this goes.

2) It's hilarious how many responses this thread has, and the challenge hasn't even started.

Well you know how people like to discuss beforehand about the latest installment of any popular entertainment :D

Well excitement is good. Helps people keep up their projects
Solving problems you didn't know you had in the most obscure way possible

"And now, it's time to hand this over to our tame race axe driver. Some say, he can live in the forest for six months at a time without food, and he knows of a secret tribe of only women where he is their God. All we know is, he's call the Styx!" - TazzieRob

Very right! If nobody would show interest into this project it would end in the dust.  ;)

Here, finally, is Day 0 of the 30-Day Leatherman Rebar Challenge! My internet situation is currently poo brain, but at least things should be settled enough for me to get the ball rolling.

Like my other challenges, this one involves punishing a poor tool for 30 days to either reach its breaking point or prove that it's a huge badass. Unlike previous tools, if the Rebar survives, it won't be a shelf queen. It'll go back to being a satchel queen.

The Leatherman Rebar is sort of a spiritual successor to the original PST—a fairly dense tool kit in a relatively small package. After satchel-carrying a Wave for five years, the Rebar is like replacing Sisyphus' rock with a small bag of croutons.

I like mythology. So what?

Anyway, here is my Rebar in a stunning, sexy pose, taken in August:

Mud! Sweat! Tears!!

Unlike my Huntsman, this Rebar is no dainty virgin tool. In the name of full disclosure, here are the things I have done with it in the past, none of which count as part of the challenge, and the damage they caused:
  • Cutting tie wire: no damage.
  • Cutting coat hanger: no damage
  • Using it as a makeshift spade: slight scuffing of the mirror finish.
  • Pounding with a hammer, similar to the awful situation seen in my Campers Tool Challenge (only once, I swear!): no damage (none! Really! And it was with a still-knurled Estwing framing hammer!)
  • Makeshift angle grinder blade removal key: no damage.
  • Miscellaneous household chores: no damage.

Here is a picture of its tools:

Edward Scissorhands!

My initial impression is that things look good, though the reamer/awl is a bit on the big side. Maybe I'll love it. I wouldn't mind scissors, either, but I can always carry a classic or something.

The things I'm most excited about are the locking tools, the small form factor, and the Beefcake Pliers. The Rebar is smaller than the Wave, but has sturdier pliers. Also, because there are no outside-mounted tools, the insides of the open handles should be stronger—that's what finally gave out on my Wave.

I have much theatre tech in my near future (and, in fact, my even nearer present), so I expect this to be interesting.

Later tonight: Day 1!

Nice! The pic of the Rebar is old, they switched the can opener with the large flathead, added a hole for the awl, added a lanyard ring, and switched the ruler sides.

Day 1 was only lightly stressful for the Rebar—though it was all in the name of theatre!

First, I finished a project started for an upcoming production of Peter Pan. I disassembled four LED flickering tea lights, and combined their parts to triple the output of one of the bulbs. This will make a reasonable Tinkerbell whilst she is dying of poison poisoning.

This picture of the internal mechanism was actually taken before I inserted it its plastic globe, but you get the idea. It looks really cool in person. You can also see what's left of some of the donor lights.

I needed the pliers to pull out battery contacts, the reamer to pry out batteries, and the blade fr cutting tape and tinfoil. All are working fine.

Opening a package with the can opener didn't work too well, but to be fair the only can opener I've had that made a good blister pack opener is the Wenger type. I can't really fault the tool for this one.

Too bad. I should've just used the knife blade.

Now that I've opened the package and removed the light switch cover, it's time to install it! This means reaming holes:

These holes!

The reamer was too big, so I had to mark the holes then ream them, which was only a problem inasmuch as I was too lazy to go find a damn pen. II borrowed one. Once marked, the reamer did just fine without the panel in the way.

Coroplast isn't too hard to ream, but the Rebar's awl did a pretty clean job of it.

Not pictured: the photo didn't turn out, but I used the Rebar as a hammer to put a finishing nail in the back of a roll-top desk that needed scabbing together. The nail went in after some work, and caused no damage to the Rebar at all. This doesn't surprise me too much. Maybe I'm just desensitized.

The knife blade sharpens makeup pencils better than the special makeup pencil sharpener, too. Go figure.
Day 1!

P.S.—CanadianLMfan, I hadn't even noticed. I haven't been sleeping a whole lot this month. By the time the challenge is over, I will probably be home just about often enough to see my bed.

I almost forgot! I WILL NOT name my Rebar "Reba", but nothing jumps immediately to mind. Naming suggestions welcome! Winner to be determined by a PHP random word selector script, because they say to write what you know.

The winner gets satisfaction and praise, but unfortunately there is no toaster oven.
