I voted "Both".

If a Leatherman is a "plier-based multitool", then any SAK or Swiss Officer's Knife is a "knife-based multitool".

I should add that a "Swiss Officer's Knife" is the proper term for any 91mm Victorinox or Wenger knife-based multitool model besides the Victorinox Soldier or Wenger SI (which are actually 93mm).  This is why those models are stamped "Officier Suisse" on the blade tang.

If I can accomplish a job with it,then I'd call it a tool,if it just cuts,then its a knife.

I said both, but I honestly think the Sak is unique, it is a seperate knife/tool entity. I'd be tempted to say it was a hybrid if it didn't pre date most other tools :)
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

I have voted for Both, I do mainly regard multitools as plier based stuff but SAK's surely have to be classed as a multitool because of their multitude of uses and also because Victorinox themselves class it as 'the original multitool' :D

I voted both also. This is mainly because it can be classified as a knife and a multi tool. Sure it doesn't have full size pliers but it has screwdrivers, an awl, saws, files, and the like.

I had to vote both. I still believe that it covers the def. Of a Multi, but I was too wishy washy to commit.

I voted knife.  :-\

My reasons aren't logical though. When I see a SAK, I think "knife." When I show a SAK to someone, they say "knife." Pull one out at a party and ask everyone what it is. No one will say "multitool."
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

That's true, and agree that it's not logical reasoning.  If you pull a Spirit out at a party no one will say "multitool" either.  They will say "Leatherman".

When looking at a SAK, the first name for an item type that comes to mind is "pocket knife", then I think "no no no, ULTIMATE pocket knife"

When I think of a "knife", I usually think of a fixed bladed hunting knife, then I think of an SOG Navy Pups one, then I thin of a Ka Bar USMC knife, then I think of an old wooden handled steak knife.

When I think of a "multitool", I think, "there's gotta be a shorter word for this...", then I think of a Leatherman, then I think of a Vic Spirit.

I'm serious, this is what I actually think!
