Gareth's pocket dump thread.
on: October 22, 2013, 06:51:08 PM
Inspired by Nikola's similar thread, I though I'd start my own showing what I tend to carry on any given day.

First up I dumped out all the stuff I had in my pockets and jacket.

The watch obviously stays on my wrist, the keys and knife go in my trouser pockets, the multi normally lives on my belt, the Maxped organiser and lighter tend to stay in my jacket.  The eagle-eyed amongst you might notice that the mini organiser is less than stuffed, frankly I find that if I fill it up then I gets a little fat and heavy for pocket carry.

Next time I'll remember to include my wallet and phone. :doh:

That is indeed my modified MP400.  Here's the full load-out:

Only think that I've added since that post is a lanyard ring from a LM Blast.

Cheers gents.  :)

OK, so here is a fairly typical 'work' carry for me;

At work I don't normally have a jacket on, but I do typically wear some cargo trousers, so things get moved around a little.  The watch stays on the wrist (surprise!), the Parker, Sharpie and Eagletac torch get clipped to my left hand cargo pocket, the phone in my right hand cargo, wallet stays in back right, the bit kit goes in my left hand hip pocket.

The multi, in this case a Flik, goes in a universal pouch on my belt, it's a pouch that I keep at work and can hold any of my 4-4.5" multis.  As I was carrying a MT with an OHO blade that day I didn't feel the need to carry an additional knife.

About that pouch. :D We seem to be mentioning it a bit lately. ;) How does it attach to the belt. Do you have to undo the belt to put it on or is it velcro? And how does it carry a Spirit compared to he thicker tools? Any flopping around in the sheath? I've been meaning to buy that one a few times but the shipping always seemed to be more than twice the price of the sheath. ::)

Pics would be nice too when you find the time. :D

well the pouch is at work, and I'm not this week, so you'll just have to wait for the pics. :D

It has a pair of thick straps that run the full length of the pouch that are Velcro'ed, this allows it to be added to Molle style gear.  However I normally just thread my belt through the back of them.  It also has straps for horizontal carry if that's your thing.  Pics will be easier than trying to explain I guess.

Because the whole front flap is Velcro just how tightly it holds a tool is kind of up to you, so while the compartment is quite large all you need to do is pull the flap tight before sticking it in place.  It does leave a slight amount of side-to-side movement in the tool, you couldn't call it loose.

As for getting one; I could always order one for you if you'd like.  It would be £6.95 for me to buy plus whatever the postage is over to you, another couple of pounds I'd guess.  No more that £10 all in I'd say.

Cool. Looking forward to the pics and thanks for the explanation. I think I understand. :D

I just checked heinnie's and they reduced the shipping charges to Croatia, only 6 quid now. :tu: I'll browse around and see if I find something else interesting. Maybe the Paul Chen. :think:

Thanks for the offer though. :hatsoff:

Great MOD. I hate the blade and can opener on my the MP400 so this would be sweet. Where did the awl and file come from?

Cheers Cap, this really is my favourite tool set for the MP400, there really is nothing else I'd rather have on it. :)  The awl and file came from a MP600 Sportsman, a slightly less common version of the 600 with a pretty basic tool selection.

The MP600 Sportsman tool are;

Thanks Gareth. Now I have to stay on the lookout for a MP600 Sportsman.  :twak:

Great idea to switch them to the MP400. Just wondering if you ever use the can opener on the Gerbers and if you have sharpened one. They are incredibly blunt in my opinion.

well if it was the only can opener I had I don't think I would starve, but I agree it's pretty poor.

I really do try and keep what I carry down to what I think I am likely to need/use, rather than trying to be prepared for the zombie apocalypse 24 hours a day. ;)

One time, I was contemplating to start using a shopping trolley to push my gear around. I realized it was getting out of hand, and started to slim down my kit instead. I still need a bag though, but it is small.  :D

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

Get a Z-Plus butane insert for the Zippo :tu:

I have thought about it, but I dunno.  It's not really a Zippo then, is it? :think:

I do have a steel pseudo-Zippo that might work, and then I wouldn't feel like I'm desecrating a design icon. ;)

I quit smoking almost 10 years ago but still like to carry a Zippo now & then :D
Z-Plus also make a gas one that works like a Zippo with a flint wheel ;)

Latest pocket dump at work.

Significant items are;
Gerber Flik
Byrd Tern
Eagletac P25A Clicky

...and a cheap butane lighter that I got from Dealextreme a while ago.  Actually it's been a very reliable lighter so far, no leak and lights every time. :)
