Interchangeable axe pieces
on: October 28, 2013, 11:38:11 PM
I'm working on designing a all around small carry axe. Something like a hatchet but with interchangeable pieces that you can add or remove depending on the application. Thoughts or ideas are highly appreciated. Thanks
Oh and links and photos is you have any :)
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

Don't forget to add a hammer end

I'm still going to get a tops fdx mini axe and I wish there was a hammer end

edit I'm to lazy to make my own.

My only worry would be making something strong enough that could stand up to making repeated concussive hits.  As soon as you any kind of linkage you are adding weak points.  Still, I am interested in seeing where you go with this. :)

It looks like those pins might snap off easily if you cant make the head fit 100%.

How about a hammer style handle with a square shaft through the axe heads with a threaded sircular part on top where you fasten the axe head with a nut.
Or a square shaft through the axehead with a solid head on top, and a long threaded handle to fasten the axe head from the bottom.
 If that makes sense

I have used the structure when the handle was removable - ax , a shovel , a saw . Slip - stick landing on a steel pipe with push button spring . Everything is very unfortunate that all these designs require complex fastening , heavy handle , poor balance , bouncing on his hands. Unprofitable to work also breaks mount. The only design that's ax, pickaxe , and so on, has a tapered eye . The wooden handle is also the cone is inserted from the other side. At the time of iopor only heavy sits on the handle eliminating backlash. Tool change , hit the handle , knock them ax. As an example of old British army shovel , pickax .

Well as I was talking to "my guy" he told me 2 steels would fit the bill. S7 and D2. Both are great for what I have in mind. However that being said, the things being interchanged will be the sharpened hatchet head will have some holes to allow a small hammer type head to be put on. This won't be used to nail boards or such, just simple type things like tent pegs and outdoor stuff. The other side will be very similar to a ice climbing axe, and a pick axe. I know this can be done it's just a matter of when I have time and money :).

I might suggest an Estwing rigger's hatchet, not designed with replaceable parts, but in this case that's a good thing !!

Just what interchangeable heads do you intend to put on it? JR
