Well, it's not a photo, but I thought some of you might find this interesting...

During a flight in a Robinson R22 about three weeks ago, my passenger and I spotted this tall abandoned concrete structure in a small town on the Mississippi river south of my home airport.  I did a low reconnaissance to determine feasibility of a pinnacle approach to landing on the roof.  It appeared solid and, to be safe, I set it down as easy as I could considering the moderate wind conditions.  I was ready to pull collective and get out of there if the roof showed any sign of weakness.

My apologies for the poor quality of the video--my passenger decided to record it at the last minute.

Pinnacle approach

Terry, do you know what the structure was?

I would be crapping bricks if I were your passenger. Oh wait. I am mildly fearful of heights. Just flying would cause previously said bodily functions irrespective of daring landings on derelict buildings.  :D

I just found some photos I took back on the 10th of June, 2009. That was our last airshow. We haven't had any since...which is unfortunate. The Snowbirds were there as well as three special aircraft painted to celebrate some Anniversary or something.

I wish I did.  With its close proximity to the river, my first thought was grain storage/elevator, but that doesn't make sense with all the small openings...  If anyone has any thoughts as to what it is, please comment.

:D Actually, I'm mildly fearful of heights also, and standing atop high precipices makes me nervous.  It doesn't bother me a bit in the helo though, especially when I'm piloting.

My passenger is a more seasoned pilot than I am, so he was comfortable.  I wouldn't do a maneuver like this with a newbie.

I agree Jerseydevil. It definitely is my favorite warbird design to-date.

Thanks NutSAK, Grathr.  :salute:

EDIT: I believe I used my Bigma...probably one of the best airshow lenses around. You can go normal at 50mm, and still get those close ups at the 500mm range.

Here are a few pics from when started to learn to fly gliders. Only managed to get aprox 5 hours stick time before I had to give it up because I simply did not have the time to continue.  :(

Very cool Grathr.  The fighters in the last two pics are Northrop F-5's.   :tu:

I know :)
The F5 was Norways main fighters until we got the F16.
I too have spent too much time looking up at fighters in the sky. One of my best holiday memories from my youth was when I spotted a F4 Phantom II flying over the beach in Greece.

Phantoms are neat too.  Growing up, the NJ Air National Guard was equipped with F-106's.  Those were very cool to look up and see.

I love the Sabre too!    :)

Here is another one that I like: the Northrop YB-49, which tried to kick the hell out of the invading Martians by dropping a nuke in George Pals' 'The War of the Worlds' (1953).    :D

Jack Northrop was certainly ahead of his time with the flying wing.  The YB-49 and the B-2 are almost identical dimension-wise.  1940's technology just couldn't produce flight controls that could keep those old designs stable in the air.  Edwards AFB was named for a pilot killed in a B-49 crash......

Those are nice. For some reason, that 30mm rotary cannon looks small in that Fairchild Republic A-10 photograph.

Well I should be loading a C-17 next thursday!  Not sure if I'll be able to get pics or not, but I will try.  This is a big freakin plane, and I can't wait to see one up close.

Not my pic.

My brother and nephew at Republic Airport in Farmingdale, NY today.  I remember seeing the Blue Angels there when I was a kid.  It was long enough ago that they were flying A-4s rather than the F/A-18 that's in the pic.......
