I love my new Gerber Shard
on: November 13, 2013, 06:05:07 AM
So I was in the market for a keychain pry bar. I have never owned one before, so I did a lot of reading of articles on this website before trying one out.

I stumbled across the Shard, and wow! It's great! For $6 it's the best deal out there for what you get.

Sure it's not a Piranha, which I originally wanted (but didn't want to commit that much money for my first time mini pry). And it's definitely not on the level of an Atwood (which I can't hope to ever afford). But, for siiixx dollllllars - you can't beat this!!!

It's very sturdy. It had a nice nail pull at the front and a 2d Phillips at the back. I found a cool YouTube on how to add a paracord grip - see pics.

I highly recommend the Shard looking to add a mini pry to their EDC. After a few bent keys and busted finger nails over the years (you know what I'm talking about), this thing is never leaving my ring.

Glad you like, but I find keychain pry bars to be ineffective.
Not enough reach or leverage to get anything done. On what and how do you use it regularly?
When it comes to pry bars 5"-6" is the tiniest I'd go.
The silver pry bar is 5" the black one is 6.5"

I think a 91mm SAK flat head (pictured) could do the same job as your Shard with a bit more utility... I'm a SAK junkie, biased I most definitely am.  ;)

In the past I had looked into getting the Gerber Artifact, but opted out of it for the reason I stated earlier.

I'm glad you like it. I have been a Shard fan since well before it was commonly available.

You are absolutely right- you can get better told, but not for anywhere near $6.  And, many tools costing several times that won't be nearly as good.

I am a recent shard owner as well and it is also my first OPMT one piece multitool.  I got it simply because this tool from my recollection went into mass production due in part to MTO.  there were some MTo printed ones that id love to get my hands on but it seems those are long gone.  yes i agree this is a great little tool and for $6 you cannot beat it.

My Shard has been on my keys for quite some time now.  It's a damn useful little thing.  :tu:  The Phillips is surprisingly effective, and as a prybar I have no problems using it.  Would it be a better pry tool if it was longer?  Yes.  But if it was bigger that would be a moot point, since I wouldn't have it in my pocket.....

I have a 5 inch Craftsmen prybar, similar to the one above, that sees fairly normal use, most recently to help extricate my dishwasher from a sinking countertop. Anything smaller or keychain sized gets used to pop the tab on soda cans. The Shard is pretty well made, but I'm not a huge fan of the size.

My only problem with the Shard is the Phillips didn't work for me.

A sinking countertop?! Did it hit an iceberg?

Hah, now that would make for a tale. The previous owners of the house installed the counter incorrectly, no braces. To make matters worse, water got in somewhere, ruined the particle board underneath, and caused it to dip. So, the dish washer door gets stuck. Yay!

Glad you like yours. I hated mine. I cant believe how awkward it is on a key ring as well. Complete dissapointment for me. Guess im the odd man out on this one though as it seems everyone else likes them. I really wanted to like it too, but it just doesnt work for me.

Yeah i didn't like mine either, too small, bent, stupid hole that makes it ride way too high on a ring. Seems like everyone here carries a sak so why the shard ?

I tend to use my shard for tasks like the one in the picture, I was cleaning out the old tape.   General scraping suits this little tool very well and the phillips is pretty good for when I've needed it.

I had my Wenger evo 11 on me and in times past just used the flat driver on whatever SAK I happened to have on me.  I guess I'm just a sucker for this little tool and it's connected to my Gerber Dime that sit in my pocket so it handy.  I dont have to open anything or worry about mucking up a SAK.  I dont always have it on me nor do I carry much on my keys but when its along for the ride it see use.

I was looking at one at Target tonight. It was paired with a Gerber small folder I think but it was the first time I saw the Shard in the field. It sure is small but as I looked it over I do not think it would ride well the way I carry my keys.

I sure would have carried it when I used to do field computer work. I would have even been handy as a tie on weight for drop lines running CAT5.

Yea I hate how it carries on keys. One of the few reasons I hated mine.

I really liked mine until I lost it with my keys. The Phillips was surprisingly effective.

I EDC an Artifact. Use it a lot. The small Xacto blade is always in demand.
