LED Upgrades/Dropins
on: November 30, 2013, 09:23:12 PM
I have a 4D and a 2AA Maglite.

For the bunch of Mini-Mags I hhave used Terralux, NiteIze and Sinouniontech Dropins, varying from 12 to 120 lumen.

My 4D has a bulb replacement Dropin that is battery-saving, but leaves a lot to be desired.

I´m looking for a nice, maybe even zoomable, regulated Dropin for the 4D and 2AA - Any hints?

Farther, out of nostalgia, I bought a US-Army 90 degree 2D flashlight I´d like to upgrade, too.
Either just a cheap one taht makes a little more light or one good enough to make teh light a real option.

Hey Lowtec,

I have a spare drop in that fits the 2AA
It's not zoomable and not very bright  ::) but you are welcome to it if you want a play with it  :tu:

(I suppose I better try to find it now  :ahhh )
Everything’s adjustable

I would indeed be interested - The less bright AA Mags get dropped in about any toolbox or vehicle so one is there when you need one.

I´ll think of sometjing I can add to your pile of useless parts in return. Thanks. I´ll PM you.

I use the Nite Ize drop ins for 2-6 C&D cell lights.  I have them in 3-C, 2-D, and 5-D lights.  No 'wow' factor when compared with modern purpose-designed high output LED lights, but adequate for most tasks IMO, and battery & bulb life are obviously greatly extended.

Terralux also makes a 140lumen drop in for the 4-6 c/d cells...

And a 1000 lumen one, but that's a bit more expensive

For the large Maglite the best you can get is Markoff - http://www.malkoffdevices.com/drop-in-mod/dropin-for-maglite-streamlight

Not cheap, but you have to pay for quality gear.

THAT's the name I was trying to remember. :D

I've had the terralux drop-in for my AA mini-maglite, the one that claims to be 140 lumen.  Not a bad amount of light, but nowhere near 140 lumen.

I've also got one of maglite's own units in my 2D light.  Again, not the brightest LED in the world (far from it) but a good colour and really easy on the batteries.  Sadly I don't think they are made anymore.

You don't have to send me anything Thomas, you have been very helpful to me in the past  :hatsoff:

I bought two so I could 'upgrade' the G/F and my 2AA maglights but what you gain in battery life you loose in not being able to focus the beam, so she said she wanted hers left alone  ::)

I was looking for an example of the NiteIze LED online and found these

This is my spare ( looks old fashioned now )

"Oldfashioned" will suit me just fine. Thanks to you, Sir!

The Malkoff ones do look like the business - and the cheapest one does claim a otf-rating of 300 lumens.
I guess I can live with that.
Or does anybody have teh Terralux 1000 Lumen variant aand will swear by it?

I did find this:
http://www.ebay.de/itm/121194077383?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

Experiences? Opinions?

I wouldn't go for that myself.  First; I doubt that claimed lumen level, but more than that, with that set up I believe all you will get a 'wall of light' and no focus, no direction.

Forget that eBay thing, Malkoff is the real deal.

I was looking at getting this http://www.ebay.ca/itm/221346423618?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 for my 3D Mag.  What do you guys think?  It's just my Jeep light, so don't need the best drop in out there.

I've tried one of the Terralux ones in my 2AA maglite. I wasn't overly impressed.
It's a lot better than it was, but I think i've been spoiled by modern torches :P

At least it brought life back into an old torch that was unusable as it was that I have a soft spot for as I've had it something like 20 years.

I have a TerraLux setup on my maglite AA, and I thought it's pretty good. I also put a defensive bezel on it to kinda match my surefire, Here's a pic. JR
