CRKT Get-A-Way Driver
on: December 01, 2013, 11:56:19 AM
As part of the Christmas gift I got from Lowtech I got a screwdriver based Get-A-Way driver, and so far I am impressed.

Here you can see the little LED and it's press button, not a bad little light, but I wouldn't want to rely on it for too much.  Also you can see that the bit holder comes off! :ahhh

and here's why the holder comes off, so as you can use it to push out the fiddly little bits themselves.  Talking of the bits, while they are standard 1/4" in cross section, they are shorter and have a sprung ball to hold them in place while in storage.  The holder itself has a magnet in the base so as it can take standard 1/4" bits as well, top marks to CRKT for including this. :tu:

On the underside we've got a bottle opener (not yet tested but seems well formed) and you can see the nice steel construction.  The whole thing actually feels solid and well thought out.  Given that these are not particularly expensive little tools I think they are very practical and well worth picking up.

Once I've had a chance to put this through it's paces I'll try and update with some further thoughts. :)

I didn't know there was a T handle set up in one of these!  That's excellent!

I'd had the same thought, but now I'm not so sure.  With the in-line position the holder is being held by a pretty good bit of steel, but in the t-bar position it's only being held by the plastic. :-\  The plastic feels pretty good, but I'm not sure it'd be up for any serious torque.

very cool tool and looks to be slim enough to not be a bother to carry in addition to other gear.

You can use the handle with greater leverage by inserting the bit holder into teh smaller hex hole in the bottom. So it will be held by steel and work pretty well.

BTW:
There seem to be 2 variants - One with Phillips abnd flat bits and one with Torx and Allen bits.

Until now, I do share Gareths impressions.
Glad you like it.

I thought the same, though it appears as if you can simply remove it.

If I remember I will try and remove it at work tomorrow.  Can't say I am wild about it either.

Happy to say that the cap lifter comes off easily and, as the screws aren't structural, you can leave them off giving you a nice smooth plate.  I'll try and not lose the screws and cap lifter, but I cannot see myself putting them back on. :)

Not at all, going by my scales it is only 45g.  The whole thing is a lot smaller than I was expecting. :)

It really shines if you have a Zilla Jr as the head also serves as an adaptor that allows you to fit standard 1/4" bits into the Jr.

Here it is with the cap lifter removed, as I said a much more pocket friendly and smooth option.  Also next to my Zippo for sacle, I had alway assumed it was much bigger than it actually is. :)

Yup, very nice! Place the screws you removed in the holes of the bottle opener and secure them with ducttape. That's how I avoid loosing tiny screw/washers and at the same time always know where they belong.
