Recommend me a G-shock
on: December 22, 2013, 01:12:53 PM
So, I've got some money left this month, and I've been looking at G-shocks (how can I not, with you guys around?  ). So, any thoughts on which one to get? I've never had one before, my only watch now is this Pulsar watch, which I carry always. I have a few preferences:

- I like analog watches
- I like not too colourful
- I like the automatic time via radio or something function, where you don't have to adjust the time

- I don't like digital so much

So, any thoughts? :)

I´ll think about that.
I might even have one or two analogs to sell/trade.

Any ideas about your preferred size?

Thank you :)
Hmm... Not too big is better, I think. My current watch isn't the smallest, but not too big as well, so, well, that.  :tu:  It doesn't have to be super-stealthy, though.

There are quite a few rugged but not Über-stalthy/tactical G-Shocks. I´ll show some later.
There are a few very nice ones you could pull off with a suit, too.

I don't really wear suits, though  :P

This sounds pretty good :)

Oh, and I'd like a light (or do they all have that?) I work in the eeeaaarly morning, so having some light would be nice.

Casio makes some really neat Ana-Digi Gshocks the one Lowtech suggested is pretty nice.
Here is a similar one and the white hands that would really stand out for your early morning.

http://www.casio-usa.com/products/Watches/G-Shock/AWGM100B-1A/

There are some others but I only seem to locate the aviation ones that are quite pricy.

trying to hit all points there are several however they are pricy as they are mostly from the aviation series.  there are ones without solar/atomic in a great price range however.

a bit pricy
http://www.casio-usa.com/products/Watches/G-Shock/GW3000B-1A/

too large at 52mm also maybe too stealthy
http://www.casio-usa.com/products/Watches/G-Shock/GA100-1A1/

the GA series are on the larger size and no atomic/solar

hmm maybe this but no atomic feature

I´ll add some info on watches i did or do own.

Basic analog digital:

G-100/101

http://watchshock.com/archive/Casio/G-Shock/G-1xx/G-101-1AVMDS/

Time, stopwatch, alarm, second timezone, calendar
I sold mine as I missed the countdown timer.
Basic design, nice size and comes in different colours and face designs.

AWG-101

Nicely designed atomic solar watch which will pick upsignals around the world (Europe, US, Japan)
Adds a timer and multiple alarms.

http://watchshock.com/archive/Casio/G-Shock/AWG-xxx/AWG-101-1A/

I have one like this available. Original pics to come.

If you like the design, but can live without solar atomic, the AW-590/491 might be for you:

http://watchshock.com/archive/Casio/G-Shock/AW-5xx/AW-590-1A/

I have 2 or 3 variants available...

If sophisticated is more your style, you might want to look at the aviators - I showed the GW 2500, here is it´s all analog brother:

http://watchshock.com/archive/Casio/G-Shock/GW-2xxx/GW-2000-1A/

It´s solar, multiband atomic and does anything except making coffee.

I have a used one on my workbench, awaiting a new battery, as it was kept in a dark drawer at the previous owner. Will be available, as I am again looking at the GW-2500....

Other analogs or ana-digis are available, but those are some I have first hand experiences with.
The GA-XXX series is too big for my wrist and in my opinion is too big for most shirtor jacket cuffs.

If you widen your search, there are literally hundreds of digital G-shocks and some nice non-G Casios and (Heresy!) some nice Timex watches around.

I do like the AQS-810, for example:

This example would be available, too as I don´t wear it often enough....

....and an AW/AWG mix to wake your appetite.;-)

Try the GW4000-1a.

Tough solar, Wavereceptor and analog.

It is the best G-Shock I have ever owned and I am wearing it as I type this now.

As this thread is back from the dead - How do you like the AWG so far, Tom?!
The GW-4000 sure is a nice watch, but for me its too big to be worn comfortably on a day to day basis and a bit pricey to be abused.
Mind sharing a pic anyways?

It's been the only watch on my wrist since I got it  :tu:  I really like it, not too big, though honestly, I don't use all the functions too much :P

Really nice watch, not as big as I feared, which is very good, and I don't mind the resin strap as much as I thought I would.

Really, the only bad thing about is the fact that the date can't be set to normal notation.

There is only one G-Shock (G-7800) I´m aware of that can do that. The AQS 800/810 can do that, though.
After selling it, I find myself eyeing that model on eBay from time to time...

Oookay, and I'm digging this back up from the depths of the EDC forum   (I still blame Thomas  )

After wearing the AWG-100 for quite a bit, I'm thinking I could try a full-digital watch as well   So, lets do this the same as in the start...

- I like not too colourful
- I like the solar charging
- I like the atomic thingy
- I like accessing functions easily, without having to scroll through multiple functions to get to the one I need. If it takes too long, I can just as well take out my phone.
- This time, I'd like to try a digital one.

Soo... Any obvious thoughts?

Oh, another thought, I do prefer the round models, not the squared ones.

G-shock's are awesome!  Master of G kicks it up a notch!!  and the Triple Sensor, Master of G Rangeman, is amazing!

where to begin!

first,  I think it is beautiful!!!

I know it is not seen by others while you wear it, but I love the jungle cat with a compass that is on the back plate.

the buttons were designed to be used even if you have gloves on and the texture does provide extra purchase.
I like the feel and would say that the "grip" of these buttons is lower than the new victorinox file, but more than the old file.
I wish I had a better method of measuring this, but this is the best I can do.  here is a picture taken through a Vic Mag glass

the small circular indicator is very nice looking and the red-ish purple is very stylish.

the band-keeper is metal,  it is very nice looking, but I think I would have preferred a resin one.  this is just a personal preferrence, and it is not that big of a deal, I just prefer the muted resin "thud" to a metal "tap" on the desk.

this is a little bigger than the GD350 I reviewed the other day, and a little heavier, but I think I will adapt to it quickly.
I have an 8.5" wrist, just to give perspective to the picture

OK,  here is one of my favorite features.  not that I need this info on a regular basis, but I think it is rather cool.
Sunrise and sunset data that not only shows for the current day, but you can cycle through and look up sun data for any day past or future.
the shadow covers the "sun rise" label  :-\

the main timekeeping screen can provide the day of the week or the 42 hour barometer graph.

to me this watch has the ABC sensor trio that make a possible life saving tool.  the fact that it is mud and sand resistant on top of water resistant just adds to the trust I will place on this watches ability to take a beating.
With a MSRP of $300, I feel this watch is worth the price,  I do not like paying that much for a watch personally, but this thing is super cool, and tough!

as to ALL the features available on this watch, I recommend the "video manual" videos below by fwupow.

At A Glance
Introducing RANGEMAN, the latest addition to the Master of G series of tough and rugged timepieces that are designed and engineered to stand up to the most grueling conditions imaginable. RANGEMAN employs a Shock Resistant Triple Sensor, which makes it capable of keeping altitude, barometric pressure, temperature and direction readings at your fingertips.

Cylindrical buttons provide outstanding operation and improved resistance to impact. The frequently used sensor button (center right) has a metal cover that protects it against lateral impact and keeps foreign matter out. Pressing the sensor button in any mode takes you directly to a sensor screen. Each sensor mode has its own audible tone, which means you can determine which mode you are entering without even looking at the watch.

All of this plus sunrise/sunset data, one-touch time recording, one-touch elapsed time measurement, world-renowned G-Shock toughness and durability, and much more makes RANGEMAN the perfect choice for rangers, rescue crews, and anyone else whose profession or activities demand unfailing reliability. Black resin band digital watch with black face, red accents on the dial and the side button.

What about the classic DW 6600/6900? Or, if you like it a bit more modern, the updated GW-6900, Multiband atomic, tough solar?
I just posted a pic of some of my G-Shocks to tease Enki in teh Love for the G thread, maybe you want to have a look what designs you do like?

After wearing the AWG-100 for quite a bit, I'm thinking I could try a full-digital watch as well   So, lets do this the same as in the start...

- I like not too colourful
- I like the solar charging
- I like the atomic thingy
- I like accessing functions easily, without having to scroll through multiple functions to get to the one I need. If it takes too long, I can just as well take out my phone.
- This time, I'd like to try a digital one.

Soo... Any obvious thoughts?

Oh, another thought, I do prefer the round models, not the squared ones.

And -again- digging this up, for a less fun reason this time...

I lost my G-Shock at school, after having to do some nursing-related practice... (as a nurse you can't wear a watch here)... :(

So, I need a new G-Shock :/

For things I (dis)like:

- I like not too colourful
- I like the solar charging
- I like the atomic thingy
- I like accessing functions easily, without having to scroll through multiple functions to get to the one I need. If it takes too long, I can just as well take out my phone.
- This time, I'd like to try a digital one.
- I'd like one that's not too bulky.

So, maybe one of the square ones, or a not too big round one would work :)

Any advice? (or offers, if you have spares (lowtech :pok: )) :P
