Behold! The PERFECT multitool (for me), Crosscut TiN
on: December 30, 2013, 06:40:05 PM
At long last, this golden beauty is mine. MINE, I say!

Here it is, sitting next to my current EDC, a Crosscut 2.0

I assume that most of you know my history with the Crosscut, but in case you didn't...

My first Multitool, purchased in '95 or '96, was a Crosscut. I carried it for about 15 years, and only retired it because I had done BAD THINGS to the scissors, and they were no longer up to my insane standards any more. Part of retiring that tool is what brought me here, looking for a better replacement.

And, over the course of several years, and a lot of different small tools, I came full circle, and purchased a Crosscut 2.0. It is a good tool. In fact, for the price, it's a great tool. It's not perfect, though, and I find myself insanely picky about it now.

And so, I waited for the funds to show up, before I began my hunt for the rare Crosscut TiN. By good fortune, lowtech happened to be bidding on one on the German ebay. He just wanted to play with it a bit, and would then be fine passing it along.  :o

And that's how it happened, folks.

I hope this isn't a heartbreaker to the collectors here, but this is seriously going to be my EDC tool, and I hope it will last me until I kick the bucket. As the last one went 15 years, I think there's a fair chance it may.

So, super special thanks to lowtech for making this happen. :salute:

Is the TiNi a harder finish on the tool?  I agree.  Purdy...

Is the TiNi a harder finish on the tool?

Yeah. TiNi is used on cutting edges to increase their lifespan. I THINK it also decreases friction in moving parts, but that's not really a need for these.

Thanks all. It is awful pretty, ain't it? :D

Great little Tool, I like the contrast between the Gold TiN at the handles and the scissor and the Silver on the other parts :tu: And you are right.........the TiN coating makes this Tool much more durabel.

More durable AND pretty as well, the best of both worlds  :tu:  :tu:  (I'm jealous, I've been looking for one of these for a while now, with no success ).

I have no problems at all when people want to EDC a "collectible", same as when people want to collect a "user".  It is your tool to use as you see fit, so go to it  :D

Congrats on finding your perfect edc Lynn!

So do both Crosscuts have the vertical tweezers, or the horizontal ones? (And does it matter to you?)

The TiNi has vertical, the 2.0 has horizontal. My original Crosscut also had the horizontal version. I have to be honest and say that Tweezers are my least used tool on this. So, it's not a huge deal, although the tweezers on my first Crosscut were perfect, and no others (not the TiNi, and not my 2.0) have come close to them.

I think, maybe, I like the horizontal version slightly better.

I thought that first photo didn't quite capture the real essence of this tool, so I thought I'd post another.

Seriously though,

There are so many good MT's out there, if the one you carry doesn't appeal to you when you're just looking at it, to me, it's time to find another MT.

This thing is so pretty to me that I want to huddle at the shore of an underground lake in the Misty Mountains, stroking it lovingly, and whispering 'My PRECIOUS.'

But yeah, I agree. There's enough selection that the tool ought to also have a real aesthetic connection with the user.

I am not sure why the simple industrial look of the Crosscut and Micra appeal to me so much. It might just be the era when I was first exposed to MTs.

In any case, I DO like the Crosscut and Micra, and only the both beautiful AND functional TiNi coating could improve it.

I'm sorry to say that even the above photo doesn't capture how awesome it looks.

Nice catch. Just be cautious of crows. I EDCed mine a few times in the past and had to be very careful as it did attract a lot of attention from people.

I know they are also in the raven family but shouldn't she worry about Magpies, they are known for stealing shiny stuff.

(sigh)

I know.

I know.

I said it was perfect. And to be fair, it made it almost a year. But in that time, it failed 6 cuts with the scissors. I think you all know I'm a bit picky about the scissors on any MT I have, so I sold them this morning.

Onward I go, for the search for the perfect MT. Maybe I'll give one of my SAKs a run as my EDC
