2014 - Year of the Axe!
on: January 04, 2014, 01:31:39 AM
So what axes are we getting this year?

I want to lay my hands on a genuine GB American felling axe for some heavy work up around my parents in the east texas piney woods.

Hopefully none. I have all the axes I could possibly need.
Not that it has stopped me getting another axe or MT before thoug.

I bought a GB Outdoor before Christmas and can't recommend it enough :)

I would quite like to get my son a light hatchet to use in the woods though :)

REALLY like the look of the Gransfors Bruks Outdoor.  Not a cheap axe though, and the axe I mounted myself is actually very similar size and weight.  No doubt whatsoever that the GB is better, but it's tough to justify when I've already got the size/weight covered.

As Grathr says; I've really got all the axes I need (and then some ;) ) so I've got nothing planned.  only thing I wouldn't mind is a good small double bit, but I really don't need one.

Gahh!  I had to go looking didn't I? :bnghd:  I just found that Marbles did an updated version of their double bit that seems to be a lot better than the old one.

It is a lovely axe, and it did take a lot of justifying :D

Its got a lovely balance to it, but not a lot of weight, so you do need to be pretty accurate when splitting as its not got much punch to it, but I knew that before I bought it :)

Here's the one I put together that I think is around the same spec.

15" total length, 1lb 7 1/2oz.  of course if you posted your GB up to me I could take some side-by-side shots, just to be sure.

Actually the haft looks a lot fuller than my Outdoor so its probably a lot more comfie than my outdoor is, as the hafts a bit too slim to be comfortable if you've got larger hands :)

Good job on it mate, it looks like a production axe :)

That's 'cos I'm not showing you the eye.  ;)  The shoulder still need to come down a little and I still want to slim down the secondary bevel.

No, I'm sure I'd get away with that no bother.  No chance at all of finding my in danger of castration at all.

We trust you, Tony. ;)

I've been eyeing a Fiskars A6 for a few weeks now. 20 quid at the local gas station with loyalty points. Always wanted to give one of their hatchets/axes a try but their prices here are usually 3x as much. But I don't need another one, do I? I still have a few in the workshop I need to re-handle.

I am 'happy' to say that the Marbles doesn't seem readily available in the UK.  Cuts own on the temptation effect. ;)

Quite a bit. International shipping for axes and hatchets is a bit spicy :ahhh + the customs charges. Saved me from quite a few purchases.

I bought a Fiskars A6 today. Compared it in the shop to the X7 (Which came with a Paraframe and sharpener for 40quid => twice as much as the A6) today and they are exactly the same, just without the rubberized handle. :tu:

Much lighter than it looks but still heavy enough. I like it. :D

Here it is hanging out with the rest of the pack. The steel handled one is a Stihl from a limited run (promotional purposes maybe).

I can't make out the makers marks on the old ones though. :(  Need to re-handle them all. Not sure if it's even worth it on the overly sharpened one.

Claw and nail puller.

Best shot of the stamps but I can't make them out.

This one's from the far right one. Also no idea. Possibly the weight markings?

Pacu that GB looks like a dandy of a nice axe!

enki over here that axe head is called a Tommy axe. I do not know why it is called that.

I have no plans currently for axes this year. But that has never stopped me in the past. The more axes the merrier.   :woohoo:

On second thought. I might need a Pulaski, Tommy and small broad axe. Before the year is out.    :D

I got the Stihl cause it reminded me of the Estwing Sportsman's hatchet, and I prefer its rubberized grip to the leather stacked one.  There's a Stihl dealership near me and they had a couple of those last year. They said the wouldn't be getting any more and they didn't even appear in the Stihl catalog. I was a bit surprised when I saw it cause I only associated Stihl with chainsaws till then, never saw any Stihl axes before.

The oldies were my grandfathers and need some maintenance. Don't even know how old they are.

This thread gave me the nudge to do a little more work on my hatchet, first I knocked up a respectable edge cover (made from some scraps from a old handbag I'd picked up ages ago for the leather).  The strap buckle got recycled to good purpose.

I also thinned out the main bevel some to a more acute angle.

Much happier with this now, but I'll need to give it a workout on something. :D
