I once almost lost mine to airport security and had to risk missing the flight to put it somewhere safe.

Same thing happened to me when I flew to Canada a couple of years ago (boy, were my arms tired!).
I was stopped at the security check and was told I couldn't board the plane with it (is it possible to do any physical damage with a Cooltool?).
I had to rush round like a fool, eventually finding somewhere that sold envelopes and I posted it back home before catching my flight.

Wow, old thread!  Yes, I still have mine from the 90s, before they started providing the 8mm allen key adapter.  I don't ride much these days but my cool tool is still in my tool bag for all riding...  Where else can you get an adjustable cone wrench!?

I'd seen one on ebay but missed it, same style as the one in the link above, it went for just under £10+P&P and didn't have a pouch. Another seller had some accessories for the Cool Tool, four types of spanner/wrench sizes, see attached. The one I got has a different pouch, single sided socket and no double ended bit. Are they rare then well here's mine.

Hi there - I joined the forum specifically to give a bit more info on this tool. I bought my Gerbers one in the mid-nineties, and since then seem to have lost a couple and gained four (basically I buy them whenever I see them cheap!).

As far as I remember when I bought it at the time there were the following accessories:

These all fitted in the wrench jaws:
32mm headset adapter*
36mm headset adapter*
40mm headset adapter
C-spanner bottom bracket adapter

Loose:
2mm allen key*
Neoprene pouch with velcro to attach to frame (pictured elsewhere on this thread)*

*means I own them (the others I've seen for sale at various times on eBay etc.)

In the UK the pouch was sold separately, but was free if you bought the tool.

Attached is the picture from the back of the shopcard that lists all the functions

This is exactly what this site is for- there are bits and pieces of info about tools like this all over the web, but no comprehensive information in one place, other than here.

Well I guess I'm cool too!!

Knew I had one and so went looking...

Mine, like most of the others was purchased back in the early nineties. I don't recall how much, but I'm pretty certain it wasn't particulary cheap as I suffered buyers remorse almost immediately. Tried to return it but was told I could only have a credit note as the tool was being returned with no faults - needless to say I took it back home and threw it in the bike box. Where it has ramained until this very day.
Mine came in the neoprene case with velcro straps for the seat tube.

Here is a slightly different bicycle tool I picked up several years ago.The sheath is used as a handle when using it as a wrench.The pommel end can be used to tune spokes.

haha, you're not having it!
It's mostly all together, I keep the wrench bit with the screwdrivers for when I actually get round to cycling anywhere - basically limited to summer haircuts as I can't carry enough shopping to make it worthwhile and I'm a bit of a pansy so winter is out!

The little adaptor from small hex to big hex is kept in my little grab pouch of screwdriver/socket things at work, it's hard to get easily pocketable 10mm hex keys.

I imagine more than a few Cool Tools have ended up that way.  It's too bad these were never recognized as being as iconic as they obviously were when they were still in production.  Perhaps they'd still be around today, or have a modern day evolved version.

I thought I´d take a break from the usual thread derailing today and do some Necro-Posting instead.

Does by any chance anybody know what thread size/pitch the chain tool bolt uses? I have acquired a Cool Tool and would like to put it to (test) service. The mentioned bolt wont thread in smoothly and I´d rather not damege the threads, so I´d like to re-cut the thread before any further playing around.

As hex fasteners became the norm, and bolts became scarce on bicycles, so there became less and less reason to carry around the majority of the Cool-Tool, as most of that weight was dedicated to a now redundant purpose.
IMO they seem to be produced to inferior standards too, and the execution is lacking since it jangles around with all those lose pointy bits. A modern bike multi is far better.
