I do feel the Kukri has been massively overdone in fiction. :-\  (sorry chaps)

I like the idea of the Billhook (who'd of guessed?), but for something less obvious what about an ice axe or a Fubar tool/crowbar?

Both have legit purposes other than whacking 'zombies' but I know I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of either. :)

Gareth does have a good point there :) I read a hell of a lot and blunt force weapons are definitely in the minority in sci fi.

I like the Fubar idea quite a bit. :tu:

Also, if you write in the new CRKT Woods Chogan T-Hawk maybe you'll get a commission from the sales.

The SMALL Fubar is 4.3 lbs.! Wow.

as a weapon of opportunity, though, it'd be awesome.

+1 on the smachete, but it is double edged and that makes some countries all kinds of squirmy and scared. I was thinking the Spetnaz shovel, actually- it's just a shovel. ANd not one you can dig that deep of a hole with. Really, how much trouble could a little girl cause with it? :)

After reading everyone's comments I am still thinking a machete would be the ideal choice as it's easiest to replace and anywhere she goes she could justify it as "like I'm going on a wilderness tour and like I don't want to be eaten by a tiger duh."

She's obviously an intelligent enough character that she would know at least a little about manipulating stereotypes.

Def has a point.
Here is another towards blunt force though - in modern era everything can be made smaller somehow. Pool cue can be disassembled, white canes and tent poles are made in a very similar way.

So it's not that hard to hide in plain sight. Now it's just a question of what

has anyone ever made a hatchet/hawk with a carbon fiber handle? Decrease the weight, and move what weight there is much farther forward? Would that result in a better cutter, or just a lighter overall tool?

A real cool looking axe, and a possibly wicked zombie killer. :D

It would change the balance for sure, moving a higher percentage of the total weight towards the head, but as you're not actually making the head any heavier I'm not actually sure it'd make any difference to the cut itself.   I feel that might make for a front heavy and hard to control fighting axe.

Someone else mentioned it earlier; my vote is for a geologist/rock hammer. I own a few and think they would be devastating weapon from the pointed or hammer end. I keep one in my truck for the emergency road cut sample collecting and no one bats an eye when they see it.

If you like it I would suggest the rubber handle; doesn't slip when wet. Estwing makes a 14 oz one that is popular with my female geologist friends:

How's the fiction coming along?

Reading through the comments I have to say the Kukri is the most overused emotional fiction item. A small latino style machete is probably more "80's" My vote is for the Spetznas shovel just because that is probably the most travel friendly item I can think of. (in fact its exactly why I have mine)

I finished the book in question. The character ended up sticking with a cane machete, which was a locally available item, so no issues of transportation.

She later (follow-up story) switched to a hand-made tool something like a long-handled parang/cane machete hybrid.

Ok, the story is finished by now. But going from your first post of a 'mere' like weapon I would have gone with a small Spetznaz shovel or E-Tool.

It is the only 'weapon' I can think of that
a) enables a forward thrust
b) has a similiar overall shape
c) is mostly considered a tool and not a weapon (low profil)

I am also not sure, how well this fighting style is suited for a 65kg woman. AFAIK a spear/lance/pole would be better as it lends reach and is defined more through technique then force.

I would not underestimate the force a 65kg woman can put out, much in the same way I wouldn't stand in front of 22lr
