Some custom Opinel
on: January 14, 2014, 10:05:57 PM
Some of you asked me in my presentation to post some pictures of my custom Opinel. It's not a multitool (except the #10 with corkscrew), but here are some in different styles. All with fileworks.

A deer antler #10 :

A Bahia rosewood carved #10 :

A cocobolo #2 :

A carved Elforyn #8 with a polished blade :
http://www.servimg.com/image_links.php?i=3

A ziricote and reindeer #8 with aluminium inlays and basketwork scrimshaw :

It was a projet for the 20 years of a French craftmanship materials supplier. He gave everyone a material and the knives and other object were published in a commemorative book.

#9 roe deer antler :

#9 with deer antler, amboina burl and chamois horn :

Another #9 in stabilized and dyed elm burl :

I'll show more if you are interested in.

Thanks a lot enki_ck. The first difficulty with this one was to use metal tools for the blade groove. The scrimshaw took time also.

Thanks to all.

How did you cut the groove for the blade?

Instead of using a small circular saw for wood and other materials I used the same kind of tool for steel (sorry I don't know the exact translation, fraise-scie in French).

Thanks CanadianLMfan. It's hard to find the right deer antler with the "crown" for a #10. This one was perfect for that use. For a #12 it's easier.

The roe deer antler for the #9 was also an exception. Usually this material suits for a #6 or #7 only.

I guess it is unanimous, they all are amazing pieces of art, but the scrimshaw one turned really really nice.

I also like the one with Bahia Rosewood

Congrats sir, your craftsmanship is just too awesome!!!

Thanks. These Australian burls are very hard and can be used as massive wood.

Another deer antler #8 in a modern style :

Another one in the same style on which I did a woodcock scrimshaw :

Two goat horn #7 :

Literal translation is "strawberry saw", which is a bit weird,  but actually its a slitting saw in English. :) Fraise also seems to refer to mill cutters.

And the work is simply beautiful.

The last one is a reindeer #9 close to the original Opinel handle shape :

Thanks, it was a slitting saw.
