New Surge Vs Super Tool 300
on: January 18, 2014, 10:07:19 PM
Received my NEW Surge this morning, it is my second Heavy duty MT, after comparing to my Super Tool 300, here is a short list of things I like/dislike about these two HDMT.

NEW SURGE

Con:
Surge is a bit uncomfortable to use because the sharp edges on outside and large handle size.
Operation is a bit complicated, swapping saw/ file, bits.
More places for debris build up, harder to clean.
The saw / file socket sometime caught on pocket when pulling out quickly.
Weights much more than ST300.
Cost much more than ST300.

Pro:
Modern design, one hand open / close outside accessible tools.
Cool appearance.
Has large Scissors

SUPER TOOL 300

Con:
No outside one hand open / close tools.
Can't tell which one is knife blade without opening the tool first. (I painted the knife blade red)
The position of blade makes different to use, sometime.
No pocket clip option.
No Scissors

Pro:
Reasonable weight for Heavy duty MT
Rounded handle makes very comfortable to use.
Very simple operation.
Even though the knife & Serrated blades are not outside accessible, they can still be deploy quickly thanks to the large cut-outs on handle.
Cost efficient

I think these are all valid points, from what I know. I'd say that this would be about the same list when comparing the Rebar and Wave.

There's a serious cost and weight addition for the outside accessible tools on Leatherman. And that's what it seems to come down to. If you want those outside access tools, it costs more to manufacture, and adds weight. I'm not saying one is right and one isn't. I'm actually glad Leatherman runs both lines, and gives users the option.

You summed it up much better than I could, thanks.

So what I think will work for me will be :
MDMT with outside accessible tools for quick draw EDC: Wave.
HDMT without outside accessible tools to save weight and cost: ST300.

I always used to carry a Wave for the OHO blades, but have recently moved to carrying a Rebar with a separate knife. For me, that works much better.

Carried Surge for a 4 hours hiking trip, weight was not much of issue, at least when I was wearing jeans, but my small hands still not happy with its large handles.
Outside Scissors are really handy. On Wave Scissors are hidden deep inside, I am too lazy to dig them out for simple cutting task.

Heavy is good, heavy is reliable. If it doesn't work you can always hit them with it.

Oh ya, I've gotten pretty efficient with opening up the Rebar quickly and selecting which implement I need. Then when I'm done, it's an easy close. :salute:
