Multitool Movie Stars
« on: December 23, 2006, 09:40:13 PM »
Why is it that multitools never seem to get the recognition they deserve in movies and television shows? All too often, it's only a brief cameo appearance, with no mention in the credits. I think they need better agents, or something.  ;)

Here are a few clips from the movie Terminator 3, Rise of the Machines.

(Don't try this at home kids.)

Great pictures  :) Well done .There was a TV show over here a while back about the SAS ( Special Air Service ) in which a ex SAS Staff Sargent ( Eddie Stone ) reconstructed some of the SAS missions and methods and in one show he was showing some of the kit that was used and there was a Swisstool in there .Also on another show they reconstructed an escape and evasion mission by a Royal Marine who used a Wave .

I have seen a couple on CSI.  In episode 23 of CSI:Miami Calleigh uses what I think is a new Wave to pull out a bulb.

Another Leatherman was used by Grissom in an episode a year or so ago to unscrew part of a drain in a bath.

I thought it was funny how Gerber made such a huge stink about one of their tools being the chice of the Terminators... and it was only shown real quick in that one scene!  The way the ads were going, you'd have thought Ah-nold would have stopped Skynet from taking over with little more than the Gerber tool and maybe one of MacGuyver's paper clips!

Hehe, I know. To be honest, it's hard to even be sure the tool is a Gerber unless you stop and freeze the frame.

Maybe they supplied the crew with tools and got the advertising rights as payment. I remember another film were a Gerber was used, the lead cop flicked open his Gerber to pick a pellet out of an air vent that had spread a poison or decease to kill the occupant of that office. Can not remember (it had that much impact on me  ;) ) the name of the film but (AFAIK) Gerber did not use it in their advertising either.

The funny thing is that when the story is written originally, it probably said something like "Terminator pulled a small pocket knife from his jacket, lifted his shirt and cut a large square of pseudo-flesh from his chest in order to gain access to the overloading AA batteries."

Then, a marketer who hangs around movie studios got wind of this and backed a truckload of money up to the door to convince the producers to change "pocket knife" to "Gerber Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines Edition Multitool."

If you read the original books for a lot of movies you see that in most cases, the make and model of the knife or tool in question is never mentioned.  In Clive Cussler's books for example, Dirk Pitt and crew often use a SAK to save the day, but very rarely do they ever mention anything about that SAK, like what tools are on it, what model etc.  Same thing with MacGuyver.

In fact, the only book I can recall reading recently that actually payed attention to the make and model of the knife used was Hannibal, where in the book they specifically said it was a Spyderco Harpy.

Start with his earlier stuff .His last couple of books he seems to have changed his style and not go into as much detail .His first book 'two bravo zero' which was a true account of his time in Iraq . After that his books are fiction featuring a character called Nick Stone but are based on experience and technique .Great stuff and a little graphic and gory in places  ;)

I've been getting away from "people" books lately because I am a little sick of hearing about these ordinary super human guys.  I like Dirk Pitt, but the guy does seem a little too unrealistic in alot of his books.  I realize they are fictional, but I think Dr Cussler pushed the envelope a little too far in several books.

I just finished "Marley & Me" by Johnathan Grogan, a story about a yuppie couple whose lives are enhanced greatly by a 97 pound "labrador evader" named Marley.  It's a pretty good book, but Marley doesn't seem all that bad, and they seem a little more self absorbed than I am...

I am just starting a book about a dog named Faith, who was born with deformed front legs and had to learn to walk on her hind legs, standing up like a person.  It's a neat story, and one that's been tols numerous times on numerous talkshows.  Faith is quite an inspiration...

Another really great book was "Winterdance" by Gary Paulson, about his real life story of bonding with the dogs he is training with to run the Iditarod, an 1,100 mile race across Alaska.  I can highly recommend that one too.

Now there was a guy who could use a good multitool!

I've read several of McNabb's books.  His 'hero' Nick Stone is far from superhuman.  At times, he is all too human.  He is almost like the comic strip "The Born Loser".

If you've ever had a really bad day and can't seem to find anyone for which things are going worse, check out one of MCNabb's "Stone" novels.  Compared to the bad days for ol' Nick, ours ain't nuthin'.

(What other multitool forum gives you book reviews mixed into the mutlitool discussion?(and they're on topic!))

Well, mostly on topic anyways!

I actually don't recall seeing too many multitools in movies and I don't watch alot of TV.  I have a short clip (Thanks Tim!) of a multitool bit that was on the Simpsons once.  Bart and Lisa are looking for a Father's Day gift for Homer and while in the mall they see a motorized multitool display.  The tool has several foldouts in each handle (picture a Dr Suess version of the Leatherman Mini Tool) with knife blades, corkscrews, an umbrella, plunger and just about everything else you can think of.

I'll see if I can post it somewhere.  It's a big file but if anyone wants it, let me know and I'll e-mail it.
