Hey Ray, on your wrench set, are there any numbers stamped on the inside surfaces of the wrench jaws?

As a matter of fact there are.I just checked and although the jaws are pretty torn up I can make out the numeral "8" on both jaws. It is probably an assembly number.I have noticed a lot of tools;especially medical instriments that disassemble are numbered to facilitate easy re-assembly.I even have an old French sailor's knife;one of the one's that uses an external spring with a ring to lift the lock mechanism that I disassembled once to attempt to repair it and found not only the blades but the thin liners between the blades were numbered. The handle was one piece of hard wood cut to fit the blades and liners.Even the liners had to go in a specific spot. Here is a poor picture of it.

Neat old knife, I like that one!! :tu:

And yeah, I've seen that type of numbering too. Here is a farrier's kit (horse hoof trimmer) made in Germany by Hauptner. Every piece, including the handle, is stamped with a tiny number 49

Very good Osos! :tu: At one time I wondered if those three and others like them were possibly all made in the same factory? The "hook" on the end of the tools is very much alike on them. But there are enough small differences that I no longer think this was the case.

I have found that tools will not interchange even ones made by the same company.Sometimes I will get lucky and find one that will but if you have a set that is missing a tool or handle you are pretty much out of luck. This is especially true of the German manufactured sets. Not only are the hooks different but the thickness of the blades is as well.
I did find an extra handle for one of my German sets and the tools fit in the end but would not fit in the center part where the corkscrew normally goes.I got it in but had an extremely difficult time removing it.
A word of caution:If you are attempting to fit a tool into a handle that it wasn't originally designed for go very carefully and don't try and force it as the backsprings will snap if deflected too far. Don't ask me how I know that. :(

It is more less like @Ray S write. Hook looks almost same, but between sets are different.
I will try next week to combine different sets, that are same sizes.

Regarding simillar sets, check this one:
Only Japana mark

Same one, but with stamp Japan Barlow:

I am not a collector of these, but found that I wanted at least one set to represent this type of tool..so this is the only one I have.

The other sets do look great. Thanks for sharing.  :salute:

I'm guessing those JAPAN sets like yours Dan and the ones posted previously were made in the late 1960's and 1970's, based on the materials used and the chrome finish and how it compares to other items coming out of Japan in that era. :salute:

Osos, congrats on getting the leaflet with your set. These days (40+ years later) it is rare that you ever see the original paperwork.

As regards the Wusthof set, it looks to be in very nice condition. :) I am surprised there are pieces gone, but you still have the knife handle...? (Usually it is the handle that goes missing from these sets)  Perhaps the missing tools were stand-alone, like a set of pliers or a wrench?

Thank you!

Yes, set with original box and papers was lying in basement for long time (that's why box and papers survive) - I can guess, because of smell of box;).

In Wusthof, like you said, that missing tools are pliers, and maybe some driller, or wrench.
But wood handle is in set, in very good condition.

This is example of similar set from Wusthof:

Here is an odd set. It has two screwdrivers, an awl, and a corkscrew, and each one has a hook shaped tab. The unusual thing is that the ax / hammer head is the handle for those tools. Then the pliers tool is the handle for the ax / hammer head. (see the same tab at the ends of the plier handles)

The whole set, along with the spirit level near the bottom of the picture, fits in a small wooden case.

There is a spring - loaded button on top of the hammer head that locks the tabs into place.

All the pieces are stamped with an 8-point star, or perhaps it is a crown? I am not familiar with this maker's mark.

Sweet set.  I don't know why but anything in a felt lined wooden case is always special.

I recently won a Utica Pocket Tool Kit on the bay. Having forgotten about this thread I started one for the Utica Pocket Tool Kit. Nik thought a link to this thread for future reference would be good so here is the link. It is one of Uticas simpler sets. Came with original box and paper work.

Very nice additions to your collection, Osos!

 :tu:

The first little zippered set is really neat. I've always liked the harp style multi tools.  I don't think they are particularly useful, but the ergonomics of the package has always appealed to me.
