DIY Stayglow... hopefully
on: January 25, 2014, 04:21:45 AM
I bought some glow powder off eBay and mixed some up in polyester casting resin.
using a plastic tray as a mold, it "shouldn't" stick to this plastic, but too bad if it does. might even make a good backing anyway.
Waiting for it to set now and will let it cure for a couple of days and see if I can carve out a couple of pairs of scales.

should have thought and dropped a couple of Vic shields in the bottom of the trays first. oh well, I can glue them on later.

Its funny how we all associate green with toxic... Must be a childhood trauma, being forced to eat too much veggies.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Been looking those powders myself. Not to scale purposes, but painting my garage doors frames with it.
How good is the glow on those powders anyway?
Hopefully your scales work. Want to see outcome on those...

the resin has set, but as I suspected it may take a few days to cure to full hardness.
BUT it looks like the glow aspect is a sucess.
one "ingot" that has been sitting inside and one that was outside in light overcast conditions for 20 minutes.

Great thread! We use glow powder, paint, dye, etc.etc. at work for the security industry. I have both glow epoxy and tritium vials on a 17 year old Tekna flashlight, The trits died completely, the glow powder is still very bright and long lasting. The best we have found in powder form is the Glow Inc. product.

NO relationship with the vendor other than end user.

I'm renting this building where is a lift door, and that has smaller door that i tend to paint partially on the inside. When i close the lights, it goes so dark, that nobody finds that door without flashlight.

PTRSAK, that looks great.. Cant wait to see ready scales...

I know that tape. I work in fire safety business, we are selling this tape. Powder or paint gives much more use capabilities. Like these scales...

FWIW, I always leave epoxy to cure under gentle heat. In my case I leave it in the boiler room near the boiler. It's subject to roughly 125 degrees F fairly frequently then.

These are polyester resin but where I have them sitting at the back of the house gets pretty warm at the moment. if it's sunny the temp will top 40oC.
It is hardening up okay. but I probably could have got away with less of the powder in it... next batch.

I use "water clear casting resin" which is a form of polyester resin.
Mix the resin up and stir in a couple of spoons of the glow powder.
I used a small multi compartment parts box as a mold. I have a bunch of them to store SAKs and parts. Pour about 5mm in each slot.

I wonder if this would work with fiberglass cloth as well?
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?
