Which Skinth?
on: February 07, 2014, 10:37:52 PM
I consider a Skinth for a year or so but I'm lost with options and my inability to understand size from pics.  Those of you who have personal experience might help me with that. What I need to put in?
1. A big Multitool with accessories
Either a Swisstool with bit-kit and ratchet or a Surge with 1-2 bit kits, extension and blades sheath
2. A Swisschamp XLT
3. Items from the SOS set. Matches (or a small BIC), sewing kit, the large compass/ ruler with thermometer, sharpener, Vic pencil, plus 3 more Cybertool bits, 1-2 long needles.
4. A Minimag solitaire
Space for a pen, a one piece tool, a knife (such as Opinel or Spyderco Endura) and a Vic dual sharpener would be appreciated.
So, this would be a big Skinth but small enough to put it from one bag to another as one piece. I wouldn't put it in my belt or pocket of course.
Is there such a monster?

Rhmm......that's a tough one. The wide variety of sizes is throwing me off.

The endura and the XLT are BIG tools in the wrong directions: one long and skinny and the other short and fat. You can likely jam all of this into a Catch All. The general dimension of a CA are 6.5" wide, 6.5" tall and 2.5" thick.

Found it. It seems nice.
Is the Trailblazer bigger or smaller?
Inches don't help much when I try to visualize.  16x16 cm, eh?

Should we talk about it in Skinth website or by pms/ mail? I'd like to decide one of the following years!

OK, let's see.
Let's start with the Catch All.
I usually carry some items in an open bag in bag that I move from my Victorinox Trevi to my Victorinox mono sling (older and bigger model) to my Victorinox backpack. I keep there my tools and accessories, e-cigs and juices, some tin boxes with MnMs, PEZ and iPhone accessories, sunglasses and several small items. They hardly fit now so I'm thinking that I could divide the tools (in a Skinth) from the rest (in the BiB) and carry them side by side (Trevi), one in front of the other (backpack) and perhaps one over the other (monosling).

Usually I carry my Spirit that fits in a side tube I guess. From time to time I would like to rotate a larger tool, a Surge or Swisstool. Would that fit? Could we exchange buckles for Velcro?
The XLT should fit in the main compartment. I might carry a Swisschamp or Juice Pro there instead.
Somewhere in the pentapocket I would fit the Minimag, the compass/ thermo/ ruler and either the Victorinox Ratchet and bit kit or the Leatherman bit extension and bit kits and saws.
There remains a side tube. Opinel and Vic sharpener?
I could fit a tin box with some small staff I keep with the SOS set somewhere? If so, I'm done.
I carry a sewing kit, some long needles, some matches (might fit a small BIC lighter), the SOS pencil (love it), some Hansaplast. And 3 additional 4mm Cybertool bits.
On the flap, if I choose Mole I could fit a pen and an Endura (or a sharpener). And a D ring for a clip or light tool with clip.
That's all. No belt carry but horizontal Velcro might prove useful with my small monosling or other bag. Color black, all my bags are black. I might put a Vic pin on it and it would look as a Victorinox bag accessory.

What do you say? Is it doable? It will save me a bit of space and a lot of hassle, since I carry these tools in their own sheaths that consume space (the leather versions) and I spend time trying to fit the tools organized in the bag after use.

What about this Double Wide? I need it as a Bag in Bag, so size is irrelevant.

I got a shield 2xl,  it will not fit the 4.5 inch tools like surge or swisstool, but I can put a rebar and a PST easily along with a other items.

here is my review of it  http://forum.multitool.org/index.php?topic=47765.0

I hope I'm not talking myself here. :)
Inspired from the Vic small SOS seath I now use, is it possible to add pockets for small flat items on the back of the flaps, under the Velcro? On the Vic I keep matches, the sewing kit, the Hanzaplasts, safety pins and the Cybertool bits. It would be great to use them for the same purpose if possible and a nice update in general.

Oh, well now. Duct tape makes for a sweet sheath. And if somethings happens to it, its easy to fix. Just add a piece of tape to it. Lol!

This is the "Which Skinth Numero Duo"!

I EDC my Skinth CatchAll for many months now and I am very very content with it. It is a powerhouse.

But since I have some tools in the drawer, I think it is time to order a second, lightweight Skinth.

I would like it to house up to a Multitool (Spirit or Charge probably, it would be nice to afford a Surge or a Swisstool) and a Swisschamp (or Harvester, or Mountaineer), plus some bits, driver extension and a Minimag Lite.

Which one would you suggest?

Well, the point is, there's quite the size difference between a Swisschamp and a Harvester, it would be hard to find one that fits either comfortably. Same, though less severe, goes for the MT's you're naming..

For a Swisschamp and a Surge, you'd need a significantly larger Skinth than for, say, a Charge and a Harvester.

I'd say, just from the top of my head, if you get a Plus or XL, you might be able to fit a Harvester in a sidetube.

I should keep it small.
Say, a Spirit OR Charge, a Mountaineer OR Harvester, a LM bit kit AND driver extension AND a Minimag lite.
Forget anything else.

I'm afraid if you get a Skinth for a 4" MT (like the Charge/Spirit), the side pockets won't be long enough for a SAK, I have an OG Skinth and that only fits 2-layer 84mm SAK's.

If you go for a 4,5"- class Skinth, you might be able to fit a normal-sized (though not too wide) SAK in the side pockets.

The Magnum might work (link), as you could put your main MT in the main pocket, and the SAK besides it, also in the main pocket.

Same goes for the 2XL Shield (link), Shields are build a lot more compact than the "normal" Skinths, so that might not be a bad choice in the end :tu:

Thank you.
I guess that one of the Shields might do it.
But I have to consider funcionality. When I go with my Teardrop Monosling I take my Swisschamp with me, as I did for 25 years. I have to see if I win in functionality with any shield combination, without getting so big that I would simply change to my older Monosling that houses the CatchAll with ease.

Still thinking about it.
Let's see it again.
1. Victorinox Spirit (or Charge)
2. 6mm normal Bit set (or Leatherman bitset)
3. Victorinox Ratchet
4. 6mm bit holder (Victorinox or  Leatherman)
5. Minimag Lite LED
6. Something small with scissors (I have Mountaineer, Juice Pro, Squirt S4)

The Squirt is fine with me. It is small and has what is missing from the Spirit.

I don't like the sideburns of the Magnum, the 2XL looks fine.

Now I know my final setup.

1. Victorinox Spirit (or Charge)
2. 6mm normal Bit set (or Leatherman bitset)
3. Victorinox Ratchet
4. 6mm bit holder (Victorinox or  Leatherman)
5. Minimag Lite LED
6. 2 layer Alox 93mm (blade, combo and scissors)
7. Pocketwrench II

In the 2XL I think they all fit.

I think I'm going to hit it, to enjoy it around Easter!
