108 mm GAK massacre
on: March 10, 2014, 05:55:09 PM
Here is what is left after I introduced a lot of defective 108 mm GAKs to Mr. Beltsander.

Neatly taken apart Knives

together with a bunch still awaiting the procedure...

I will use the parts to practice peening. Later some liners and springs shall help to build some Vic 108 mm mods.
I already did one Solo with Awl. Peening went well, it snaps good and I could pop on the scales.

SAK massacre?  :o Oh, the horror, the horror! :ahhh
 ;)

Looks like you've got a good bit of peening practice ahead of you. :tu:

This could get very interesting. :tu:

And the broken blades could be used up too, as they are most probably out of some decent steel. Maybe make some electrician knives out of them.

Ive always wanted to tear apart a 108 and do a full Ti conversion on one, but them being rather hard to come by I havent had the heart to rip apart any of the ones I have.

I'm curious to see what you come up with.   :tu:

Ditto. I have a Vic GAK who's prior owner took the tip off, so it was reground to be a slight clip point. The scales are kinda ragged, keep meaning to replace them.

I've got another one that is even worse shape I can canniblize- I just haven't gotten off my butt to do it.

Thanks though

Speaking of canniballizing, after the rather destructive act of taking those knives apart and tossing away the broken parts (scales, combotools and springs) I started puzzling together 2 single layer GAKs.

One is a "Solo Plus" and the other is a "Solo poker" as it adds the Awl as a backtool to the single blade of the solo.

I did not bring a camera so I can just show those finished pics.

A few days later I found some more time and first added a bail to the Solo plus.

It´s made from a wire coat hanger and bent with hammer, vise and pliers.
I´ll think about a Jig to be able to form the bail more even, but as a proof of concept it works fine.

I had to pop the scales off of the Poker anyways as the blade pivoting pin was a bit too long.
After repeening I decided reapplying the scales with the Corkscrew cutout was no option.
So I dug out some wood I had lying around and had my first go at making scales.

I used my scroll saw (which I bought to saw thick Aluminium, which she won´t do very well...) to get the rough outlines.
As I did cut a tiny speck of the actual scale outline off, I had to get creative and enlarge the holes on the back so I could slide the scale around unless all of the liner was covered.

After the outlines and backside holes were in place, I used a 4 mm drill to keep the scales in place while glueing them on.

The next scales will be done with only a layer as a template, and not an actual knife inbetween.
Sanding the scales to shape and profiling them is much more work with tools sticking out.

I think the scales are still a bit thick, but making them taper to the ends of the knife makes the knife look ok.

The wood is beechwood that I sanded and oiled.

Yes, I know the pictures do suck and I took not enough, but I´ll try to take some nicer ones.
What do you think?

Thanks! There is much to be learned, but both knives work well.

As for the workshop, it´s just looking that way.  ;) Usually, I´m a total neatfreak in my shop, but after storing stuff I should have thrown away about 2 moves ago, parking friends bikes over the winter and working on different projects at a time (one of them being cutting the work and stoarge space in half to save on the rent) makes it more crowded and chaotic than I would like it to be.

Sorry to come to this so late Thomas, but I'm just catching up on a big backlog of unread threads.  Really good job on these, especially given you've not done it before. :tu:
