Recomendations for a good jet flame lighter
on: March 14, 2014, 02:40:19 PM
I've been in a couple of situations lately where I required done kind of fire creation device and I haven't had anything.  This annoys me so I've added a small box of strike anywhere matches to my Jeep EDC, but for a variety of reasons that isn't ideal.

This morning I received a call from one of my friend's tenants who was frozen out of her apartment after yesterday's rain and flash freeze. A match isn't good forb that so I stopped at a store on the way over and got a cheapo jet flame, figuring that would be good enough to get me in, and it was.

So, I want a better jet flame. I've had good ones in the past but the ignition doodad often melts or the seals go, rendering them useless.

Is a simple jet flame lighter thatvis bulletproof too much to ask?

I looked at those but I wondered if they were any good.  Thanks for the suggestion.

I've been looking for a Brunton Helios lighter as I hear they are pretty tough but they also seem to be discontinued.

I have a Wenger Clava (here my Review)
Its large and unpractical for daily use. But its design is brilliant for kits where it gets rarely use.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

I don't have it, but I think it might be better than zippo blu:

I am very embarrassed to admit it, but I missed that review the first time around and I just read it after finding it in a Google search for info on it!

That is pretty close to exactly what I am looking for- a bullet proof lighter that will stand up to some abuse and work when I want it to.

I like look of a Zippo Blu. Bit smaller than a normal Zippo, so casual user might get more out of it...

For Cigars I use Xikar and S.T. Dupont lighters. They are about as good as you are going to find on the market, and the Xikar comes with an unconditional lifetime warranty. In fact with Xikar you can bring it in to any Xikar dealer and they will give you a replacement right there. The Xikar stratosphere has lasted me around 2 years now. I smoke 3 - 5 cigars a day, so even on the light side that is close to 2000 strikes and going strong.

This one always gets great reviews but it might be a bit larger than you are looking for, course that just means it holds a lot of butane.

I've been using a Ronson Jetlite for quite a while now and it has been nothing but good to me. It may not be as nice as some of the others listed here, but it sure doesn't cost much. I'm not sure if it is good enough to fit your desires but it never let me down even in some pretty bad weather.

I keep a matchbook in my wallet.

I read good things about the clear version of the Blazer Little Buddy but I don't own one so I can't tell you for sure.

Also, if you can find a really tiny propane tank then you could get a Bernzomatic head for it :D

Well, it is a bit large for EDC, but here is my choice for thawing frozen things:

I tried a cheap, and then expensive jet lighter and both stopped working.  My SAK with the lighter doenst work.  So I gave up on them.  Fine for a spare, but if its something to depend on when you really need fire, the cheap bic lighters work much better.  Then you have a piece of flint too when the lighters all done.

I vote blazer. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00G5JXCNC/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1394976933&sr=8-2&pi=SX200_QL40

I've been using mine for well over a year and a half. Lights almost every time, fuel last a long time and it has a big tank.

I have one of those, but it's not much good to me when it's in my garage and I'm on the other side of town.

I like the look of that blazer too.

I have had a Eurojet lighter for some years
http://www.katsafados.com/lighters/cigar-lighters/eurojet/eurojet-lighter.html

I also have had some cheapos and some more expensive ones. They all work OK for my needs.

You just have to be careful when you refill them as unless you bleed them properly first they will not be filled fully.

Same here, I did buy quite a few of these cheapos(Chinese made ones, mostly) and just leave it everywhere I might need it.  Usually I could buy one at around 7-15 usd locally(usually single flame, but more expensive more flames), and for emergency kits, I do have more than a few ways to start a fire just in case.

+1 on the Ronson Jetlite. Mine lives on my work bench as a quick alternative to my pen torch.  It's drastically improved if you remove the anti-child spring from the button.

For EDC I just carry a mini BIC.  I nearly never need a lighter but when I do I have a decent one.

Not sure if you guys have convinced Def, but you have provided me the impetus to try one.  Initial impressions are very good, especially given its price point.  Hopefully it holds up to regular carry and use.  Any particular brand of butane they seem to like best?

To be honest, I have not yet gotten a good lighter yet.  I bought a cheapo at the local smoke shop when I posted this and it seems to be holding up pretty good so far.  I'll probably end up getting a decent one sooner or later though.

I think you really should try a Ronson Grant

next time you're stuck at the check out at WalMart they are usually on the rack by the cash register .

I'm sure you will be happy with it.

I drove a truck over one and lit a smoke with it a minute later.

The Jetlight arrived today.  Sorry for the horrible photos but I'm heading out the door in a few minutes.

The lighter arrived with what appears to be a full charge, so I'll put it to work right away.  The steel body feels pretty solid, so I think it will take a good pounding.  Hopefully the guts inside won't crap out like some other jet flames I have owned.

I had a good jet flame lighter, but lost it many years ago.  I wouldn't mind finding another one to assign to cigar duty.
