Thinking about a better folder
on: March 15, 2014, 04:39:59 PM
Heretofore I have carried an inexpensive folder but lately have moved over to an SAK (generally a climber) on a pocket dangler. I also have a Sportsman and really like having a nail file so I am working on a mod and will (of course) post that when finished with pics.

Anyway, I do not have a bunch to spend, maybe $40, so I have been searching for possibles. I did want to submit to the "Communal Brain" the following criteria and see what bubbles up!

Blade = 3 (+/-) inch plain (non serrated) THICK + BLACK/GREY
Lock = not a back lock
Ambidextrous (speed/flik not required)
Max closed length of 4 1/2 inches
Light weight
Thin handle

Plus will be movable clip

The ones that seem to be closest are;

ESEE ZANCUDO
ONTARIO RAT 2
Kershaw Cryo

I also like the looks of the Boker Magnum Baron but cannot seem to find the handle or blade thickness anywhere. Looks more like a "Gentleman's Knife" with wood scales and is priced lower. Anyone own one?

I'd go with the Ontario RAT II. Thinking about getting one of those myself.

I don't think you could go seriously wrong with anything that's been mentioned, but just for the sake of expanding the field, how about a Spyderco Tenacious?

That was going to be my suggestion. GREAT knife for the price. It is a little bit "wide" but nothing that isn't manageable.

I enjoy my CRKT M16 Zytel. Easy to carry in the pocket but stout enough for daily use too

Have you had a look at Byrd knives?  Good bang for your buck and should have something that would suit your needs.

Edit:- Byrd Raven would fit the bill I'd say.  While I've not owned that specific model all the other Byrd knives I've owned/seen have been very good.

You could darn near get both the Cryo and the Rat for just a bit over your budget.  I have the Cryo and while a heavy smaller knife I really like how it carries and love the design.

The Cryo is a sweet knife. Wish i still had mine. Maybe ill get another someday. It is small but feels heavy and well built. Also i like how it carried when clipped in a pocket.

I agree and for a Rick Hinderer designed knife for under $30 I feel its quite a lot of knife.  The coating ( titanium nitride ) is very pleasing to my eye and I really like the blade shape and the speedsafe is wicked.  I like the weight and while admittedly mine hasnt seen any real work for what I've needed done it sure did deliver.  JerseyDevil's pictures got me interested and I am more than pleased with mine.

The Cryo is an excellent knife for the money.  I'm a Kershaw fan for sure, but they outdid themselves with it. Very solid, decent blade, and probably the best clip Kershaw's ever done. :tu:

Thanks folks! I will check out these suggestions. I have an ongoing spreadsheet with all the data so it will likely come down to which feature I feel is most important.

All very  worthy and this will make my decision harder not easier but that's what we come here for, right? An having too many choices increases the odds that I will just get two!

8Cr13MoV.  A Chinese steel that takes a good edge and is easy to sharpen.  Byrd knives use it a lot, as do Enlan, SRM, etc.

I found this last night, seems very new and I cannot find the handle thickness. I'll email Kershaw.

The website says its coming soon so it might be a few months before it hits the market. Very cool looking knife and the locking mechanism is very intriguing.  :tu:

I emailed Kershaw and got a fast response. I did not ask about the steel type only the following questions.

Blade – 0.110”
Handle – 0.54”
Handle at Button – 0.57”

Seems a little on the thick side for my needs, but data is data!

I finally figured out that paying around $30 these days gets you a WAY better knife than $15-20 so then it boiled down between the Rat II and the Zancudo and what tipped the scales to the Rat was this.

Four choice clip location
Deeper carry
Non-reflective clip side
Ever so slightly more blade (POINT OH SIX INCHES   :o )
Ever so slightly more handle (POINT ONE TWO FIVE INCHES)

I actually like the look of the Zancudo slightly more, though I may be in the minority in that respect. The Zancudo handles are thinner (.31" vs .42") but the Rat weighs slightly less (2.75oz vs 3.1oz).

They did not make it easy but we all have to decide based on criteria which is most important to our carry situation and such.
