I always liked the idea of a flashlight that could use both but I'm not so sure if that's actually a benefit after they came out with the SC52 that can handle the Li-ions if I'm not mistaken. The advantage of the CR123 batteries is that they provide the more output in a smaller size than AAs but the 80/82 is also wider than a standard AA and longer than a standard CR123 flashlight. If you already have a flashlight that can take Li-ion batteries like the SC52, why not just use it with a 14500 battery and revert to regular AAs if needed?
I agree with that to an extent, and I do prefer the AA format and mostly use AW14500 and Eneloops in my lights.
The reason I like the SC80 is simply for its cell versatility. Though I prefer the AA format, I do use CR123/16340 to a lesser extent, mainly because the shelf life and performance of CR123 is vastly superior to other primaries. They are better for emergency stores--even better than L91. Therefore, I keep stock of Eneloops, CR123, 16340, 14500, and even 18650 on hand. The SC80 can use the vast majority of those cells. A secondary benefit is that I like the form factor and knurled grip of the SC80 better than the SC50/51/52.
I still likely will buy an SC51 or 52 if I can find a good price, but I will also seriously consider finding a SC80 and keeping my ear to the ground about the SC82's arrival.
