Which is the better Pocket Kitchen knife?
on: March 19, 2014, 06:38:34 AM
I'm always on the lookout for a good pocket kitchen knife and so I've come across 2 different but interesting knives that might fit the bill.

Contender 1:
Boker Sanyougo knife
http://www.amazon.com/B%C3%B6ker-03BO050-Boker-Sanyougo-Knife/dp/B007BN8VF0

Contender 2:
http://www.knifeworks.com/bladetechfoldinguluuniversallockingutilityorange.aspx

Which would you guys pick?  The boker looks a bit classier and fixed blades are nice, but the ulu tech has the gadget factor and the extra inch of blade, but it also has lots of spots for food to get stuck and rot :(

I'm sure I've read a review of the ULU saying the blade is too thick and not wide enough for a good kitchen knife,
Might be good to handle before buying?

I love the look of the Boker

Have you seen the Victorinox 4 inch paring knife? Too long?

Böker Böker Böker

FYI:
The Boker Sanyougo is also available with a "green" handle LINK
There is a larger version called Böker Plus ChefYouGo
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

O wow I didn't even know about the chefyougo.  The cheapest price I can find for it though is like $85
http://www.boker.de/us/kitchen-knife/boker-plus/knife-to-go/03BO040.html

I saw the micarta handle ones and through wasting a lot of my life reading contradictory things I came to the conclusion that the 12c27 steel on the g10 version would be better for food stuff compared to the X50CrMoV15 on the micarta handled ones (green, white, etc...)  Even then I'm not 100% sure.  Plus those micarta ones are like $10 cheaper than the g10 so I'm not sure for that either.

I thought it would be an interesting comparison mainly because both blades are a higher quality made in china blade and have food prep functions.

I got one of these (http://www.agrussell.com/a-g-russell-folding-cooks-knife/p/AG-135VG10/) for my brother last Christmas.  I felt it handled reasonably well for what it was; I'll have to remember to ask him how he likes it.

That A.G. Russell one looks pretty stylish.

I saw a video of the Boker Sanyougo and it doesn't look as good in the video compared to the picture they took of it.

Both of those have there benefits but the one that outweighs the other is the fixed blade, so I would have to say the boker.. JR

I would recommend "Tenacious knife" as the blade of it is good for cutting and peeling purpose. I also mange it to use in other outdoor activities like:- working in park for cutting unwanted branches, skinning copper wires etc. The important thing is that this knife is available at cheap prices, hence AFFORDABLE!!!

A budget option that I have used before is the Cold Steel Roach Belly: http://www.coldsteel.com/Product/20RBC/ROACH_BELLY.aspx  Not quite sure it's 'pocket' sized enough for you though.

Of the two in the opening post I think I'd go with the Boker.

This is a tough one now, because it turns out the boker is going to cost more money, because I would have to get a sheath made so I can keep it on my belt (illegal in California to conceal carry a fixed blade and the sheath it comes with doesn't have belt loops).  Does anyone know if there is an easy way that I can make my own sheath or a cheap place to have one made?

What does the law say to knifes carried in your backpack? Do they still count as concealed?

Maybe you can put a belt loops on the sheath of the knife. But you have to see how good the retention is.

I found another interesting one from boker that seems to be on sale, but I don't know how good it is.

https://www.boker.de/us/pocket-knife/magnum/hunting-outdoor-knife/01MB457.html

I feel like all of the folding knives might have the problem of knuckles hitting the cutting board.

I'd forgotten all about them. :-[

They are big old knives though. :o  Not sure I'd want to pocket carry one of them.

I really wish it had a pocketclip if it did, it would be cheap enough to be worth testing out so it wouldn't be a big loss if it didn't work out for me.

I actually like the Boker kitchen knives. I have the more traditional knife shape one and it's quite good at what it's designed to be. It's not a pocket care, but more of a sheath carry, or jacket pocket.

Easy to clean too.

given how cheap they are I'd say they are well worth checking out. :)

from the website it's $10 + shipping which is almost $10, If they combine shipping though then buying a couple of them might be the best deal.  Or maybe I'll just get one from amazon and call it a day instead of being stuck with a bunch that I don't like.
