NutSAK's carry stuff
on: March 19, 2014, 04:10:24 PM
I purposefully didn't call this my "EDC" thread because, let's face it, there are very few items that most of us, myself included, carry every day.

So, to get that out of the way...  Here are the items that I carry every day:

Wallet (Dopp Front Pocket Getaway)
Keys (with Rambler and peanut lighter)
Phone (Samsung Galaxy S3, not pictured)

This week and next, I've decided to be minimalist.  So, I'm just going to carry a slipjoint and a simple, durable flashlight.  After all, I have all the tools I need in my briefcase anyway (LM ST200, Vic CT41, 4Sevens Quark Tactical 2AA).

It doesn't get much simpler than today's carry:

CMG Infinity UltraG
Case pattern 6107W SS (Wharncliffe mini trapper, single blade, Second Cut Antique Bone)

Yes.  I own several Cases, and this particular one and pattern TB62117 Swayback Jack are the best built recent production models I've handled.  Both have great fit & finish, walk and talk, well-centered blades and no gaps.  This Second Cut Bone and the Chestnut Bone of the Swayback are also the best looking scale materials currently available, IMO.

The only complaint I have with the pattern above is that the blade could be better "sunk" into the frame.  It is proud enough of the frame when closed that it can easily be pinched open without the nail nick.  Of course, this is because the pattern is also built as a two blade trapper with main clip blade, so the nick on the secondary wharncliffe has to be made to clear the main.

Thanks for the kind words guys!

Today is the first day that I've carried only a Rambler, a slipjoint and a flashlight on my person at work.  It just so happens that I had to do some server work this morning, and needed to remove a couple of phillips screws.  I didn't bother to go back to my bag and get the CT41...  I just used the Rambler, and it handled the job just fine.

The CMG, of course, did a great job of lighting the crannies (and the nooks too) behind the rack.

The bailing is what's holding me back from trying the same. Just can't bring myself to drop functionality even though I know it's a long shot or rare use case.

Will be looking to this thread for inspiration for sure.

I feel naked without a certain minimal amount of gear whenever I leave the house. I recently swapped the Wave over for EDC'ing my Rebar since it has more fiddle-factor. I hope I don't run into a situation where I need a bit kit but I can always buy the adapter and carry that too.

Me too, but it is working fine here at the office.  I'm sitting 3 feet away from my briefcase containing a CT41 & ST200.  Even if I'm in another room, I have access to those within a minute.  So far I haven't needed them at all, but time will tell.

I must say it's comfortable to just have a nice light and slippie on my person.  It makes for light carry.  I've always felt "naked" without a SAK in my pocket, as I've carried one for 30 years but, it is rare here at the office that I use anything on that SAK but the blade.  I finally have realized that I now have an excuse to carry a nice slippie.  A well-made light and slipjoint offer plenty of fiddle factor for me.

Thanks.  Though I've owned several brass Peaks over the years, I have mixed feelings about brass as a flashlight material.  It is a beautiful metal and feels great in the hand, but I would reserve it for smaller AAA lights.  The weight of a AA or larger bodies like this one does not mix well with the softness of brass when it slips out of your hands and onto concrete or tile.  There are several marks on the tail of this one to illustrate my point.  I have an aluminum/HA Pacific identical to this brass one that weighs half as much (50 grams HA vs. 103 grams brass with 14500 cell).  It has been carried more and doesn't have a mark on it.  But, it isn't as pretty.  :-\

I have mixed feelings myself about the patina they develop.  I really like the beautiful shiny brass vs the patina so I can see myself obsessively cleaning the light.  Thanks for the AA vs AAA comparison, I run eneloops in my lights and while I like to think I'm AA light user I have more AAA ones.

I think the patina is what attracts me to them.  Brass is sort of a "living" thing, and it's constantly changing in appearance.  I don't like it completely tarnished, but I like it polished and especially with a slight patina like the pics above.  I only break out the polish when the patina becomes too developed, but that can be avoided by simply using a clean cloth to wipe the skin oils off before it's put away.  Carrying the light in a pocket keeps it fairly well polished.

Here is a pic of that light just after I've freshly polished it.  I like it this way, but I really prefer the light patina it has right now.

I like the look in those pictures.  I guess in going thru a shiny stage  :-\ I've polished my Wave, Surge and a Japanese PST.  I like the patina to an extent as the brass does look warmer and that little AAA like is very attractive.

As expected, Thursday's flashlight/slipjoint pairing fit the bill at the office.  The Pacific lit up the areas behind workstations and servers with aplomb, and Bullwinkle sliced open packages with the determination of a moronic moose.  No other tools were used.

Friday's selection:

Queen Cutlery pattern #51 Trapper Jack, D2 tool steel & birdseye maple scales.
Peak LED Solutions McKinley SS, snow white 5mm LEDs x7

Thanks!  It's usually pretty difficult to get a good photo representation of what the BEM scales look like, but I think my phone did fairly well this morning.  They should appear gray with a slight blue/purple tint.

BTW, it's the D2 steel that I really like about the Queens.  It takes a great edge and keeps it, and is very corrosion resistant.  I think it's the best of both worlds between carbon and SS.

Nothing unusual over the weekend.  I carried a Skeletool and Farmer in the Helo on Saturday, and on Sunday, an ST200 and the Farmer around the property.  The only tool I used was the Farmer's blade, to cut open a few bags.  I used dedicated tools for everything else...

So, I could have easily gotten away with my office slippie/flashlight carry.

So, this might be a dumb question... But why not a thin SAK instead of the traditional slippies? I mean, your username has to be nutSAK for a reason? :)
