I always marvel how "lively" a Trail Guide is despite it's size...must be in the balance because I've had other big knives that didn't "float" this way. Even with my RA, it's a joy to wield. They got it right!  I hope a re-handle doesn't screw up the balance.

I only begun researching in earnest again but it's probably will be beyond my ability to do it properly myself....and the RA is really weakening my hands. Downloading all the "do it yourself" posts/pics to see what's under the handle and since it's a convexed first gen, I don't want to screw it up. Have to think about the handle shape as well...I like the original contour really well.

Will probably end up using this guy....(he's done a bunch)

Would love a linen micarta replica of the orig grip (but pinned w/two big Loveless bolts) with a lanyard hole.

Is that the San Mai version or the 01 carbon?  Inquiring minds would like to know.

How has your knife held up? Do you like the steel?

(Image removed from quote.)

It's the (01) Carbon V version and still very trail worthy. There is no tang shift/ movement in the handle but if you squeeze on the flats (in the center), the Kraton kinda snaps back up from the tang...it's infinitesimal, but it's there. It used to feel solid but I oiled the ricasso and some went down into the handle causing the tiny separation.  I've owned it about 5 years and chopped limbs, weeds, cut heavy cardboard etc and it's worked great. Had to get up to speed on the convex edge but finally got the hang of it (sort of). It stayed sharp so long that it didn't need sharpening for a couple of years. If I had my druthers, it would have a flat ground edge.

The previous owner was an idiot who didn't take care of it but despite that, it's still an amazing knife.
