2014 Challenge Coin/Tool Design Competition
on: March 22, 2014, 01:07:04 PM
Hello and welcome everybody, especially those who have signed up and will be taking part in this year's Challenge Coin/Tool Competition.
The name of the competition has changed since last year (apart from the obvious year change) to broaden our scope for creativity, that just the coin format may have stifled. Therefore the competition will be split into two main groups: Coins and Tools. These two groups will run parallel to each other and a winner shall be chosen from each group, along with a runner up.

General Rules and Guidelines for both groups.

Contestants may enter designs into both the Coin and Tool design groups, but only one in each.

The competition will run for 4 weeks from today, Saturday the 22nd of March, till Sunday the 20th of April, unless i'm asked to extent the deadline by three or more contestants, in which case, a seven day extension will be added.

Contestants are encouraged to keep the community updated as to the progress of their designs, with pictures and explanations. This will help get, potential voters, engaged. I would suggest that contestants start a thread each, about their design, which will be linked to the list at the bottom of this post.

Contestants are also encouraged to seek help and ideas from the community when needed. Non contestants may help may help contestants out in any way, including: design ideas, sketches, drawings and digital 3D models.

If you are not taking part in the competition you may still post any ideas and designs you may have in this thread. This is a design competition, so the more creativity shown the better.

Designs deemed offensive by myself, or the community, will not be put forward for voting. This includes anything that implies negative connotations towards anyone's race, orientation or creed.
Of course, since the winning coins will be chosen with a community vote, i would expect that any images or messages that people found offensive, wouldn't be very popular and would have no chance of winning.
It's important however that people feel their creativity isn't being stifled, so we'll play it by ear to some extent.

I ask that there be no mention of the forums founding year. This is just a personal thing but a seven year anniversary doesn't seem that special. Waiting just a few more years will allow for the much more impressive 10 year anniversary coin. Seems to me to be something worth looking forward to.

Contestants should hand in to me, a picture, or pictures, of their design (maximum of 4), along with a description of their design and it's purpose, or function, no more than 500 words long.
Failure to hand in any design material, primarily some kind of image, will mean that the design will not be put forward for the voting stage of the competition. However since contestants are encouraged to provide updates of their designs over the next few weeks, progress work from theur may be collected and submitted instead of a completely finished design.

All work received shall be made available in a dedicated thread for a community vote, from Monday the 21st of April, to Sunday the 27th. After which time, the votes will be counted and the contestants with the most votes will be chosen as the winners. One runner up will also be chosen from each of the two groups.

Contestants will retain the rights to their own designs, with the understanding that the Multitool.org forum may use the designs, as it deems fit, in the manufacture of coins and/or tools, for the main purposes of forum promotion and community well being.

Although all efforts will be made by myself and other forum members, to have the winning contestant's designs manufactured for a production run, similar to last year (without the duplicates), no guarantee can be made that this will happen. There are too many variable to be absolutely confident that it can be done, but as I said, we shall make our best attempt to do so.

Rules and Guidelines for the Coin group.

The design restrictions for this group are mainly going to be those imposed by the coin company, chosen to manufacture them. We would like to use the same company we did last year, as a sign of good faith, amongst other things.
Therefore contestants wanting to enter designs in this group should study this website and it's options: http://www.thecustomcoinstore.com/, paying close attention to the “Examples” section and the drop-down options in the “Free design and quote” section.
The Examples section shows a number of non-round designs, as well as many elaborate enamelled finishes. These are all allowed options, but must be well defined in the final design drawings.

This group will focus more on graphical design of the coin's two faces, rather than adding tools. Some kind of tool or function will be allowed but please consider that the more complex the design, the less likely that it will be able to be made by a coin making company.
A limit of two dimensionally critical features (specific sized hexes or slots for example) should be imposed, but this can be discussed on an individual basis.

The coin should be no larger in diameter or thickness than last years coin; about 47mm (1 7/8”) by 3.6mm (9/64”). A non-round coin design should consider the diameter dimension as the length of a side, describing the maximum extents of a square. Rectangular shapes may trade length for width and vice versa, so a 47mm by 47mm cube can become a 40mm by 54mm rectangle, or something similar. These are maximum allowed dimensions, designs may be much smaller.

Rules and Guidelines for the Tool group.

This group is pretty much for the designs that are too complex to made as a coin. Last year we saw many designs like that and it would have been a shame not to be able to include them. There will be two main manufacturing options to consider: Laser/water cutting and 3D printing. Each has it's advantages and disadvantages so understanding these will be important.
Other manufacturing processes may be considered, if it's justification is considered valid, but cost will be a limiting factor.

Laser cutting and water-jetting are two processes, used to cut almost any material, usually in sheet form, into complex and highly accurate shapes. Here is a website that gives a good amount of information on water-jet cutting: http://www.accujet.co.uk/index.htm. Laser cutting is similar enough not to require any difference in a design, whether we are to use one process or the other.
Basically the design needs to be mostly two dimensional. Some simple machining will be allowed on the cut-out design, things like adding sloped prying edges, but nothing elaborate as this will raise it's manufacturing cost too high.
Laser engraving is an option that should be considered, to add text and graphics to the tool. Apart from minimum line thickness considerations (0.2mm), pretty much any design is possible.
I will be available to do the required 2D drafting needed for the group winners and runners up. Contestants should try to create reasonably accurate 2D sketches, using graph paper to keep an eye on the design's dimensions.
Laser/water cutting's advantages are: it's cheaper than printing, highly accurate, almost any material can be used so even high end, hardenable, tool steels, stainless steels or even titanium can be an option, although cost will most likely prohibit this.
It's disadvantages are: It's two dimensional limitations, it's need to be engraved separately and the high cost of any post-cutting machining needed.

3D printing can create complex and difficult to machine, three dimensional shapes with ease, but is less accurate than laser/water cutting.
For examples of 3D printed tools, I would suggest searching for tools on Shapeways: https://www.shapeways.com/search?q=tools (there's a lot of unrelated junk but some good ideas in there somewhere). However most people, my self included, have just printed designs that could easily be made using laser/water cutting, so try and think more in 3D to get the full benefits.
There are design restrictions with 3D printing though. The material I would recommend designing for is the Stainless Steel material, here are it's design restrictions: https://www.shapeways.com/materials/steel?li=nav (it can actually be printed as fine as 1mm in some situations). This steel material is not anywhere near as strong as tool steel, so consideration needs to be given to keeping vulnerable features strong.
Text and graphics can be included directly into the 3d model with a fair level of complexity.
I will be available to do the required 3D modelling needed for the group winners and runners up. Contestants should try to create reasonably accurate 2D sketches, using graph paper to keep an eye on the design's dimensions.
3D printing's advantages are: more complex shapes achievable and text and graphics can be made an integral part of the model.
It's disadvantages are: It's higher unit cost, lower dimensional accuracy and less suitable material options,

Maximum dimensions will be 50mm (2”) by 75mm (3”) by 4mm (5/32”) for laser/water cutting and 25mm (1”) for 3D printing, although just like with the coins, extra length may be traded for width, if a design needs to be longer than 3 inches, or wider than 2 inches

I will be monitoring the threads as best as I can to help identify anything I suspect is unlikely to work or could be done more simply.

(i'm sure i've forgotten something, so expect these rules to be updated soon)

So on other words, ask the forum what things they would like, come up with a design, then send it to you? JR

Not quite, you don't have to ask the forum, what it wants. If you did that you'd get so many contradictory suggestions that it would be rather difficult to choose a route to go down. The community interaction is mainly to help expand on the underlying design in the best way possible. If you're sure of how the design will play out then it's not necessary.

I need to collect materials for each design and compile them into the voting thread, at the end of the competition. Other than that, unless my help is asked for, or i notice something that needs clarification, i wont get involved, until the winners and runners up are announced and we start discussing manufacture.

Since I signed up first it seemed only fitting that I put up the first thread with a design. I'll add my second simpler design to it after I get input for the Slingshot based multitool :)

To all contestants: Please include "2014" on your design somewhere, for posterity.

Ok, then why not say, just come up with what ever you can and just send it to me? Lol, JR

Now that you put it like that, i'm not entirely sure.

For some reason some of the links from the first post, don't take me to the right threads.  I think it's all the links with ... in the hyperlink.  But in subsequent posts those links work.  Is anyone else having that problem?

Cool this is fun to watch develop!  I have no design skills so I cant contribute really.  For a small coin with a tool though Id LOVE to have a fold out clam shell package opener.  I know its not simple, but I think it would be a super cool coin 'tool'.

Thanks Guys, very nice.

Although the competition has officially ended, I won't be putting up the voting thread until this Friday (25th). Therefore contestants can still post up new and modified work up to then.

If your design is finished, please PM me a short description of it, explaining it's key features, along with 1 or 2 pictures, that will be used for each entry (max size 600x600 each). A link will be included to it's specific design thread. Please specify which of the two competition groups, the design is for and if it's for the "Tool" competition, then please specify which method of manufacture is to be utilised.
Pictures of most of my work can be found on my Facebook Page.

Reply #20 on: April 25, 2014, 05:29:48 PM
Well it turns out I'm an idiot, I've been trying to summarize each of the designs and have realized that I simply can't. They're not my designs, so I can't decide which points are worth commenting on and which aren't. Also in some cases it's not clear which is definitely the finalized design.

So I'm going to give it another week (start friday the 2nd) and in the mean-time I'm going to bully all contestants into deciding how there entry should look.

I will be PMing all those involved but essentially I need:

1. Which contest the design goes into (coin, tool or possibly both, if it's suitable)

2. Up to 2 main pictures (max 800x800) and up to 3 smaller pictures (max 400x300), that clearly show the design and any features it may have.

3. A short description, or summary of the design (max 10 lines in standard font size), outlining it's key features and anything that is not clear from the pictures, or not yet fully defined.

Failure to provide the needed description will result in an almost certainly poorly worded and unenlightening attempt from myself, so please take the time and give it a go.

If you would still like me to do some 3D modelling of the design, then please let me know asap.

Each entry will have a link to the forum threads for each design so please add a post, further explaining the final design in your thread to help voters better understand the design, with the extra information that can't be included in the summary.

Hi everyone,
Sorry for staying quiet for so long, but I now have news aplenty.
However first I'd like to fill in any gaps as to everything that's happened on the forum, in relation to this competition, since my last post.

After collecting all the competing designs, the two competition polls ran their course.

For the challenge coin competition poll:
http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,52001.0.html

The winner was Raukodur.

With the runner-up being Microbe.

After some community feedback, Raukodur's design was amended slightly.
http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,52474.0.html

For the challenge tool competition poll:
http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,52114.0.html

The winner was Microbe.

With the runner-up being Etherealicer.

That's everything up to date, now for some proper news.
Although the prize for winning either competition was understood to be the attempted manufacture of the victor's design, the prize for the runners-up was kept intentionally vague, as different designs would incur varying levels of manufacturing challenge and cost. As a base commitment though, I planned that the runner-up designs would  also be made available for purchase, in some way, or another.

I therefore present Etherealicer's USB Challenge Tool 2014.
This tool's metal body is available now on Shapeways.
https://www.shapeways.com/model/2163250/etherealicer-s-usb-challenge-tool-2014.html?modelId=2163250&materialId=23

And that's not all.....I also present Microbe's Poker Chip.
Since these turned out to be quite economical, we took the plunge and ordered a fair number of them.

But what about the winning designs? Well, since the most economical way of manufacturing them would be to use laser cutting and since the designs are similar enough to cut from the same material (2mm thick 304 stainless steel sheet), they will both be made at the same time. However this is quite a large one-off expense, so at the moment we are trying to get the funds together to place the order. This will definitely be happening, one way, or another. Sales should be able to commence in August, at the latest, with the two winning designs being available separately, or as a bundle. Either option will come with one of Microbe's poker chips as standard.

Once the order has been placed and then received, the various purchase options will become available on EDCSource. Don't worry about missing out, as it will be advertised in the banners, when the time comes.

Cheers

Thanks guys,
Although we can't compete with last year's coin design in quantity, we'll blow it out of the water in terms of quality.

Everything looks great!  I'm really hoping that I'll be able to grab one of each when available.

I was wondering what was going on with the projects. Thanks for the update and excellently done. :hatsoff:

I think it's better to leave the production for early Autumn. The forum finances might be a bit strained with all the shipping costs of the giveaways we'll be running this year. :ahhh
