Would appreciate info on this Gerber multitool
on: March 22, 2014, 10:02:33 PM
Someone gave this to me for Christmas, I think in the 90's, possibly earlier.  I promptly stuck it in the tool tray on my motorcycle and forgot about it.  Lately I've started reading the forums here at multitool.org and now I'm curious about this Gerber tool.  Any idea when it was made?  What is it commonly called?  I've tried the reference pages here and can't make progress because I can't answer either of those questions.  Thanks in advance for any info!

It's a Multiplier as for variant one of the gerber guys will show up soon I'm sure they'd know. I know it's a later model due to it having the patent on it as well as not having torx bolts.

Yup, Gerber Multi-Pliers from the 90's. Not a real early model, but still very cool. Looks to be in excellent condition. They are not worth a whole lot but I personally love the Multi-Plier. These are commonly refereed to as the "Mr. Pinchy" the older variants also have GERBER in different font than the newer variants.

Greg will come by and probably give you a exact time from of when this variant was made.  :tu:

I'm back (I've been away at a dog agility trial, so missed out on my regular fix of MTo for 4 days, but I did come back with a good case of sunburn).

That Mr Pinchy is called a Multi-Plier by Gerber, what is often called a version 5 on MTo.  It is the last of the non-locking full size Gerber MTs of the era (they changed to the Multi-Lock or MP600 after this version, and the MP600 is still on sale now).

It was also available with needle-nose pliers for the first time.  IIRC early to mid-90's sounds about right - I bought one around 1993 in Australia, it was my first and (for many, many years) only Multitool.  It lives in the glovebox of my van, and still gets used now  :tu:

They are a real workhorse, but as suggested by the nickname  "Mr Pinchy", can pinch the palm of your hands if the handles close suddenly (eg when cutting some thick wire or if the pliers slip when gripping something).

Flicking the pliers in and out can be quite therapeutic when you are stressed or bored (but exceedingly annoying to anyone else with earshot).

Possibly, but in this instance I'm guessing Black Oxide. :D
