I broke my Fenix E01, what to replace it with?
on: April 01, 2014, 09:29:18 PM
I know they're supposed to be indestructible but mine wasn't. The thread between the body and cap has stripped and it doesn't look like I can fix it. I think that it was just a loose fit - a manufacturing problem - but it's out of warranty.

I want a single AAA keychain light to replace it - shall I get another E01, an E05 or something else?

I would say look into the E05. The run-time is no where near the E01, but its putting out more light.  :tu:

I've tried VERY hard not to get into 'flashlights' (multitools is enough of a habit)
Kirky (yes him again!) showed me an olight which did look pretty good ;)

Wow, never thought those things could be destroyed

Hm... given the long run time you're used to with the Fenix E01, I guess... the E05 isn't the best idea - it's brighter, but wiht about 3 times shorter run time.

How about my fave Olight i3s? It's a little more expensive, but it's cool, cute, you get 20 lumens for 8 hours and three modes? In fact, I'm waiting for my now 5th to arrive, lol

Brighter is good. The E01 felt a little dim at times and I'm not too fussed about runtimes. Normally got a spare Lithium cell on me anyway.  How about the LD01?

I killed an LD01 but then again I kill everything.

I'm not sure I understand what the problem with your E01 is. Could you show us a picture of two of the threads you mentioned?

There were times when I thought I killed an E01 too but a clean up, re-lube and new battery did the trick.

If all fails, I'd recommend a Olight i3 as a good AAA flashlight.

another vote for the Olight i3! :tu:

I've been EDCing the newer version (i3s) for about 3 months now, and it's a great little light.

I also like the i3s. Mine has survived the washer and a few days out in the rain.

If you liked the E01, the E05 is the most logical choice.  Single stage and nice light.  Don't mess with those multi-stage lights.

There not much to see, sorry. The threads just don't engage properly any more so the cap can just be pulled straight if the body. They're such a fine pitch and I guess that one is slightly out of tolerance.

All good suggestions IMO.  E05 is a great little single level light, the i3 and LD01 are both good multi level options.  Another to look at is the ThruNite Ti series (Ti, Ti2, Tis), different options with them, both single and multi levels.  For compactness the E05 is hard to beat though.

The e05 is all flood though, so just for close up work. Worth mentioning.

Good info.  Should be ok though - this will just be for ferreting around under my desk and trying to find the lock on my front door.  I've got a pair of LD20s for blinding the neighbours. :tu:

I really like the e01, but when I upgraded to the ld01, there was no going back. The newest version has good mode spacing and no pwm. Very nice light.

If you want indestructible, I suggest a peak eiger. Pricey, though you get what you pay for.

I really like my AAA Streamlight Microstream. Simple one-mode operation, good runtime, and I've heard excellent things about Streamlight's durability (haven't tested that yet though ).

That's a light I've had on my 'want' list for years now, but never quite pulled the trigger on.  I suspect that's because it's a little too near the spec's of my Leatherman Monarch 300, and I'm a guy who likes gear that fills a unique role.  Still, if I found one going cheap I suspect I'd still grab it.  :)

I would go for the E05, it's a cracking little light and slightly smaller in length than the E01. Great flood as well.

Since you seem to know your EDC flashlights, what about the Fenix E15? the only thing that puts me off (well, there's also the price, 57.5$ on amazon.it vs 26.5$ on amazon.com) is the CR132 battery, which is more expensive and harder to find than an AAA battery.
