Are there more than 32 basic colors in 58mm
on: April 05, 2014, 01:58:49 PM
ON a previous post it appeared that there was 32 basic standard colors in SAK.  I just bought this new knife in forest green off of ebay and after getting it it looks to be a different shade of green.  I have seen now a lot of different names for the same color but this is actually different.

It's entirely possible that there are more than 32.  I tend to think that this is more of a variation rather than an intentional new color, but I'm certainly not the all knowing.

Can you post some pics of this with other greens that you have?

I too would like to see a photo comparison because without something to compare with we don`t know what we`re looking at and are at the mercy of different coloured light sources, exposure variances and monitor calibration. Another source of confusion is the description of the colour, is Hunter Green the same as Forest Green?

Speaking of names of colors, it doesn't help that they aren't even standard between counties.  For example, I just recently saw a camel color listed on eBay.  It's the same color as Rust in North America, but called Camel in some European counties.

A hunter green and a forest green both new out of the box.  New color or how would you classify it.

Very interesting!  Check the boxes and see if they perhaps have any identifying numbers on them.  It's still possible that this is variation in color pigment from different years, but I'm starting to lean towards this being a different color.

For what it's worth, on eBay Central Valley Wholesale has both the Forest and Hunter listed:

Forest is listed as Number 53001FG
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Victorinox-Swiss-Army-Knife-58mm-CLASSIC-SD-Forest-Green-53001FG-/141215704412?pt=Collectible_Knives&hash=item20e11ca55c

Hunter is listed as number 54094
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Victorinox-Swiss-Army-Knife-HUNTER-GREEN-SIGNATURE-58mm-w-Pen-54094-/130849951610?pt=Collectible_Knives&hash=item1e7743cf7a

The definitely appear to be different colors.

Well there is absolutely no question in my mind that Forest Green is a new, yet undiscovered color.  What I'm not sure of is if this is a relatively newly released color from Victorinox, or if it's an older color that just wasn't seen before.  Either way, kudos to SingleShot for the discovery.

I picked up a Forest Green of eBay and it arrived today.  I've attached some pics of it sitting with the Hunter Green.  Forest is on the left.  Also a picture of the new green family.  Not a great picture... I'll probably do a new one later for the wiki.  But the second picture is (left to right): Pale Green, Retro Green, Translucent Green (Emerald), Forest Green, Hunter Green, and Sage.

Now, to answer the question raised in the title of this thread... well, that's better answered in this thread: http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,51109.0.html

I wasn`t sure which green I had so I bought a used Forest and Hunter just to be sure and they arrived today. After a wash and polish they`re looking good. The red nylon Classic I got to make up the 32 is now ensconced with the other 58s which don`t fit into a `set`, e.g. Stayglow, Chocolate etc. It seems there`s always something new to learn in the wonderful world of SAKs. :ahhh

I've also added updated pictures to the SAKwiki and changed the color page:
