Great video!

I just have one question: Wouldn't I have to temper the blade after cutting & grinding? He cuts with a welding torch (you can see the colourization) and grinds with sparks flying. I thought this would ruin the hardness of the blade.

I have no idea. Someone more knowledgeable might be able to answer that.

All of the machete makers here do, but they only retemper the actual blade itself. Granted though they don't use torches/welders, they hammer forge them from leaf springs, ball bearing steel (beautiful spalting!) or large saw blades.

From the LiveLeak comments:
Quote
@cyclone87 Hand saws are most likely made from spring steel. Ideally, for any type of blade that you want to use for hacking and swinging around it should be hard enough to hold an edge yet soft enough to be durable and not shatter. This can be achieved by special processing of the metal or through alloys (think japanese swords and also forge welded).

I would advise you to not read the other commentaires there. I am now looking for mind bleach...

Still some cool links I found there:

Yep, it would be a pity to bash it about, easier to buy a surplus machete like this one (1996 Ontario) that I bought to cut back the bushes at home.....

cheers,
