Got a pretty good start on the mod tonight...

Tools of the trade:

the contenders weigh in:

(Image removed from quote.)

a new record for me -- 30 minutes to get the Rebar plier head into the Wave! :D
(Image removed from quote.)

I had both plier heads swapped in just under an hour. I guess practice really does pay off. ;)

both tools still have their original tool loadout, except I swapped in the S30V blade on the Wave. I also removed the scissors from the Wingman, but I didn't have time to do any Dremel work tonight... hopefully soon. :) Finishing up the Wave will be pretty straightforward; I just need to figure out how I'm going to get the Wave scissors to fit in the Rebar handle.

glad you like what you see so far, Kampfer. :D

just for the record, here's what I'm working on:
Quote from: Kampfer
What I have in mind is a mini Surge based on the Wave platform.
  • Replace Wave pliers with Rebar pliers
  • Replace Wave scissors with Rebar awl
  • Replace Wave file with Wingman scissors
  • Replace Wave PE blade with Charge S30V blade

some updates for Kampfer :salute:

I busted out the Dremel last night to reshape the tools that Kampfer wanted to add to the Wave (Wingman scissors and Rebar awl).

For the Wingman scissors, it's simply a matter of enlarging the pivot hole. I used a carbide bit in the Dremel:

Static electricity is cool. :D

The awl was up next... the back side needs to be reprofiled to allow the Wave handles to close completely. (I used the grinding wheel on the Dremel, followed by some fine grit sandpaper.) Luckily, no modification is required on the sharp edge of the awl. :)

I still need to finish a couple minor tweaks, but at this point, Kampfer's tools are basically finished:

Kampfer, check your PMs for some additional details. ;)

Thanks guys!

I'm hoping to have some time tomorrow night to put the finishing touches on these so I can get them shipped back to their rightful owner. :salute:

I'll be sure to post a couple more pics when they're completely finished. :)

per Kampfer's request, I held a final weigh-in once all the finishing touches had been put on the tools. :D

interestingly enough, the Wave (now with Rebar pliers and Wingman scissors) didn't have a significant change in weght...

Both the Rebar and the Wingman lost a little weight, as expected...

Yes it is. I figured it would be a tad heavier. Not much but some.

I probably should have weighed them in grams for a more precise measurement.

My guess is that the Rebar plier head is slightly heavier than the Wave's, but the Wave's file that was removed is slightly heavier than the Wingman scissors...

very glad to hear you're so happy with the finished mod.

out of curiosity, what are your plans for the Rebar (now with the Wave plier head and scissors)? backup MT in the glove compartment?

So we can see how mini the Mini-Surge is, ;) doesn't look much in photos, but it is pretty noticeable for EDC.
I have no plan for the mod rebar yet. Maybe going to be a shelf queen.

It reminds me of the old Fuse but with extra tools from Rebar, can I call it Re-Fuse?

is that your desk that you're placing the tools on for these pics? whatever it is, the dark background contrasts nicely with the stainless steel tools. :)

Whaaa? You made an inside out Rebar with scissors and an urge to take off fingerprints when you open the blade!  :D

Looks great. The ReWave mod is excellent, but this unscrews the bar and mounts it higher. An updated Wave, not junk for sufers and scatboarders, is what people are asking for, and yet again, it's only happening at MTO. Why... I don't know.

I like what I see here. My only problem with the Surge is its size/weight but this makes it all possible. I am curious though, what about a coupler for removable file/saw?

The size of blade exchanger is dictated by the physical size of jigsaw blade, it won't fit on a wave, at least we haven't figure it out yet.
