Returning from Pacific Northwest with Mini-Surge, I'd share with you some memorable moments with you.

First, Mini-Surge went meet its crafter: Breezy12

Then it went visit its birth place: Leatherman Tool Group
Staff at Leatherman really liked Mini-Surge, they think it is very thoughtful and well crafted, as they seen many failed attempts return to warranty department, and stated Mini-Surge would still be cover by their 25-years warranty. However they were little puzzled why I choose Wave platform for such mod instead of Charge.

Third, in Leatherma's retail store, Mini-Surge met the Signal for the first time. And of course it  picked up many souvenirs

Any expansion on this? Very positive news for modding.

I was told if it says Leatherman on it, it is covered; they replaced tools been burned to ash, shot to pieces, rust from being at bottom of lake for years, etc.

Also they told me they have plenty of spare parts for retired tools; when a retired tool is unfixable, the warranty department would harvest parts from it before the rest send to scrap,  parts would be refurbish and put in inventory.

So aslong as genuine leatherman parts are used anything goes! That is awesome news, it also probably puts me towards wingman scissors rather than SAK on my plan. I'd assumed I wouldn't have warranty before.

When my prybar (large screwdriver) broke on my wave a few months ago, I emailed them about the mods I did and they said that normally it would not be covered because I removed the screws, but told me they would honor the warranty as a one-time thing. I guess they changed their attitude in the past few months, because they weren't very happy with me before. It also states in their warranty that alteration would void it, so I wonder if it depends on who you're talking to.

Don't hold me responsible on those statements, I was just told such.

Hello everybody!
Lost my more than 20 year old Supertool last month. :-((
So looking for some information about the Leatherman WAVE I found this post, and I love it! I would like to buy me a WAVE and at least change the WAVE´s wood/metal file to the SURGE´s T-shaft holder. Anybody here who can tell me if this is possible?

Thank you and best regards from Germany,
Armin

First welcome to the forum   :tu:

I don't believe they are compatible, I think the pivot size is bigger on the Surge but I could be wrong.
If you want to replace your Supertool there are plenty on E-bay.

Welcome to MTO.

Never seen a t shank holder on a wave, so I am guessing it would be very hard or impossible. That is just a guess though.

I think Metro put one on a Charge a while back, but it required milling down both the scale in the Charge, and the T-shank holder. Requires some pretty expensive equipment to do properly at home.

Thank you for your Infos!
I like the possibility to use the LM with a metal saw. Something that is very useful driving a 50 year old car   ;-)   So I just ordered the Surge version with the two bit-holder...

Thanks for the inspiration of putting a nice and well thought out pocket tool together. Now that Leatherman has given you the blessing to modify and still able to supply the warranty, I am interested in jumping on the band wagon. Will start gathering parts and go for it.

The charge scales will be inherently different look from the surge. I think your wave mod is perfect choice. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, I wouldnt count on Leatherman honoring the warranty on a modded tool like the Mini Surge, regardless of what the employees say.

Agree, if one have the skill to mod such tool, he should be able to fix it when some parts of said tool is broken.

Hmm this got me thinking you should do up another Mini Surge in BO.

The S30 blade, scissors and gut hook blade in BO will be extremely hard to hunt down as donors...

It was mentioned about MTOers sending tools out to be BO treated... Anyone had tools dismantled and sent out for powder coating??? I think this would be awesome, just wonder if it would cause clearance issues....

Glad you like it.
The cost was one Wave + Rebar + Wingman + Charge Tti.
At the end I have one kickass MT and three less than perfect MTs to gift out.

The most expensive part was the cutting hook, I bought a Tti just for that.

How much labor time and special tools does it take?

I suppose I should let someone else who has done this kind of modding before, but really it is not bad.

You need the bits to take apart the tool, which may or may not be difficult to find, and any reshaping can be done with files or a dremal tool.

A juice or SAK requires a drill and pin punch to deal with the pins.

Over all it is not too time intensive one I get the parts my Jucie mod will likely only take a few hours to assemble, after a few hours of disassembly.

It is that time of the year again, family road trip, Mexico, Legoland, universal studios, etc

I am sure some of the places we will visit has "NO WEAPON" policy, so I am going to bring Mini-Surge for the trip, hence it is just a Leatherman, not a weapon.
