One thing I forgot the mention, the steel used for the LM file is HARD! I could not use normal files to refine it.
Dremel is the way to go.

doesn't surprise me! :)

I'm planning on giving this a try with my Dremel once the ebay lot of files and blades arrives. :mail:

Your mini surge is the closest thing I've seen to my ideal MT. Can you design or alter the pocket clip to attach to the pliers end? That's the big thing on my list.  I'm not crazy about the Wingman scissors, but they work. I'd like a changeable saw/file, too. There's no way I could do this myself, so I'm hoping LM will catch up.

Thank you Terry,
That is why we have MTO, we brainstorm how to mod a perfect MT, but the quest will never end.

Wonderful stuff, brother!

Now you should send that last comparo photo with opened tools to Mr. Leatherman - I'm sure he'd find this new Wave-on-steroids concept interesting...and who knows they may pinch an idea or two from you and Breezy for the new & coming V3 Wave ;)

I also love the fact that you didn't 'burn' too many donor tools and reduced them to parts bin, along the way. That Frankenstain-Rebar is a great tool in its own right now!  :tu:

Keep up the good work, mate!  :multi:

I sent one of your pics in an email to Leatherman. I want a Mini Surge and if they will add the wingman or similar pocket clip, I will be all over it!

The can opener / bottle opener is the most useless tool on Leatherman, I can not stand it any more.
Re-profiled it a bit, sharpened it, now it can easily rip open two layers of duct tape on cardboard.
Yea, I want a box opener.

Same here.  I've been using mine as a package opener.  Unprofiled, it does just fine with packing tape and padded envelopes.

Funny that...to me it's one of the best executed and one of most used of all LM tool implements  :pok:

Many multi tool makers tried to make a decent bottle/can opener but failed miserably (Gerber especially). All the while Leatherman managed to 'squeeze' in not one but 4 useful tools into one implement - bottle opener, can opener, wire stripper and basic belt/rope cutter, all of which I tried personally and used with great success. It's almost a 'multi tool' in itself, in that one small tool piece.

Obviously needs, situations and MT uses differ among us all here, which is quite good and refreshing...where would we be if everyone used the tool the same way  :D

Cheers!

You are correct, let me rephrase what i said, it is the most useless least frequently use implement, even when it is needed, other implement can do its job. I am in need of box opener can slide through tapes. It would not able to do that unless I sharpen it.

I could use a box opener much more than a can opener or cap lifter.

After sharpen it,
The ability of lifting caps is questionable, I think it will just going to punch a hole in cap instead of lifting it, but I really don't care at all.
The ability of opening cans should be improved.
have to test it tonight

I think Victorinox has the best can opener for opening cans, but Leatherman's can opener is more versatile (after sharpen).

Man you just upped the ante on that tool, it's now became officially a "multi-tool" ;)

1) Bottle cap opener
2) Can opener
3) Wire stripper
4) Doubles up as strap and cord/paracord cutter
5) Box opener

...and looking at it I believe it could also be used as a 6) make shift scraper.

Mind boggling!   :tool:

now you've got me thinking... would the Wingman package opener suit your needs? with a little Dremel work, that would probably fit in the Wave handles and maybe even lock into place. ;)

and I agree with you, re: Vic vs. LM can openers. :tu:

No, I really dislike wingmans package opener. I think it is pointless.
Reason being this implement only has one single purpose, taking up space and I don't think it is good at what it design to do. Everything on a MT shall be versatile.
I would rather use a sharp knife if I wish to open up a blister pack nicely.

I agree; I'm not a big fan of the Wingman package opener either. I just thought it might be an option if you reeeeeaaaallly wanted to get rid of the can opener. ;)

:drink: The can opener can stay, just needs to be more versatile.

S30V is fine, but I am not a heavy user like JA, i didn't push it to its limit.

I have found the package opener works quite well.
Everything your combo opener does I can do with a knife so I don't mind removing it.

Of course, but seen like such a weaste to use a nice knife for such task.
So if the can opener can cut boxes, that is win for me. :tu:

Wingmans box opener can not open cans... :td:
