Question for E01 owners.
on: April 17, 2014, 04:24:03 PM
I was just wondering what the tint is like on your E01s?  I only ask as it was one thing that really put me off buying one years ago, the very purple/blue tint they all seemed to come with.  Is that still the case or have they moved over to a whiter LED?  Or is it still a bit of a LED lottery?

It's a Lottery. :D

I have 4, maybe 5 of them and they all have different tints, from almost white to eye hurting blurple. ;)

And the bad part is that the worst one is the one I got last. ::)

But then again, you'll notice this only if you're hunting white walls, not in real use. :P

I think there was a trick some time ago with rubbing the reflector/LED bulb with 0000 steel wool to get an even, whiter beam but am not sure how that worked exactly. Never tried it.

With my E01, the tint never bothered me. I guess i'm not very picky in that subject, as long as i can see with it, it's all good.
The E05 had no tint as far as i can tell, and the flood light is very nice, much superior to the E01 in that regard, being 3 times stronger and all, plus the plastic diffuser thingy, but falls back on battery life.

Yeah, that's kinda the choice I made already and got myself an E05 a while back.  I like the amount of light, the way it's used and the tint on the E05, it's just that the E01 is still calling to me I guess.

Mine was purple. In normal use I didn't really notice it that much, but when shone on a white wall, it was horrible.

All mine are purple, but like the others I never really noticed it in use :)

The new ones are a tad more powerful with a shorter runtime so that may affect your decision to buy one mate.

Don't know what, but there's just something about the E01 series that makes them pocket calling...
Could be knowing that it can provide light for even 2 nights, and their tough look and feel. Don't know..

OK, I've ordered one. :D  Always like the look of the olive green version so that's what I've gone for.

I haven't used my E01 in a while, but I didn't think mine had a purple tint at all. I popped a battery in and wow is that purple compared to anything else I own.

I'd not actually noticed that.  Are the few extra lumen actually visibly brighter?

Only side by side, in use you can't really tell. I've not tested the runtime yet though :)

Well, I finally got my E01 in yesterday (listed as 'in stock' but takes over a week to dispatch? Colour me suspicious. ::)).  Anyway, the good news is that I really do like it.  Yes, the tint is still pretty purple, the beam is scruffy, the LED is a little off centre, and yet it still makes the darkness brighter. 8)

I just noticed that my eo1 goes on when you click and hold the top of it. Is that a normal feature or is there something wrong with this one?

You mean when you press the head in towards the body?  If so, then yes, this is standard for most twistie lights.  You might want to think about loosening the head a little more to avoid accidentally draining the battery if it gets squeezed on in your pocket.

My E01 does seem to be a little more prone to this than some of my other lights now you mention it.

Thanks for the headups. I just loosened the head a little bit to see if that reduces it. At least the battery won't drain as quick as it would on an LED Solitaire light.
