What will become of your legacy??
on: April 29, 2014, 11:57:40 PM
I'm pretty certain this topic has been aired before.

What do you suppose will become of your collection when you are no longer with us?

I needed to find something the other day, and had to look through every single MT/SAK storage box. It was ridiculous. Luckily, she was out...phew!!
But it got me wondering if my sons so called "heirloom" may actually be more of millstone than a blessing.

Don't get me wrong, an old dusty shoe box lurking in the loft full of MT/SAK goodness would I'm sure be a sight to behold. BUT, add another 20-30 shoeboxes and I'm beginning to think its too much.

What's your views on the matter, what do you propose?
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

I've told my wife to contact a few different members here to help her distribute my collection. Chances are it will all end up in the hands of Tim to be sold off to members.

My wife says she probably won't part with them, but I'm not really sure what good they will be to her when I'm gone.

I hope my kids appreciate the tools when I'm gone.  I think my youngest is most excited about them, she likes to have a look every now and again.  I know she thinks they're "pretty cool" and she knows they will be left to her.  My oldest daughter has began to appreciate them and knows I use them for work and she's seen me carry them.  She has asked me for a knife so we've been looking.  My son now could actually care less  he's not much into them.

I suppose when I'm gone I'd hope they'd keep the one's I used to make a living. I've included a price list of what I've paid so at the very least if they sell them they won't be giving them away.

I would say if I pass on to the otherside there won't be much of a fuss. As far as my stuff, I am sure it will get divided up to a few certain people.

No kids and I don't think my brother trusts my nephews with anything sharper than a plastic spoon, so no go there unfortunately.

My son can't wait to get his hands on some of them already, so chances are everything will go to him. Of course, if my daughter has any interest, she'll get some as well.

Same will go with my tools. I have a lot of tools from my grandfather, lots I have bought myself, and I'll be getting my fathers when the time comes.

If I was still married my biggest worry would be that she sold them for what I told her they cost.

I don't know.

I've never thought about it.

I thought about it.

my nephew and my siblings will have to split them up

I think I'm going to write something up about what goes where.

I don't have a large collection but all are important to me. I want them to be appreciated when I'm gone.

my collection will have to be shared by my two sons when my time comes. currently, they both love looking at my collection, playing with the different tools, and "helping" me clean them. :)

I should probably write out who gets the most sentimental and/or valuable pieces, but the bulk of it can be split up however they want. if there are any arguments, Delta10 (my brother) can play the role of mediator. :D

The problem I have is that I  don't actually know how many I have
It could be anywhere between 300 - 600+

Apart from possibly 10 duplicates, they are all different models. Unless my son get a largish  house or more like his future wife/GF is very accommodating :twak:  then ultimately storing will be the main issue.

I guess I'm going to have to seperate the cream from the fat so to speak and categorically itemise  them with both photos, description and current values. The rest.........

My current idea is to leave  my personal login details of MT'o and then hope that members here would act as so called middlemen so  they were auctioned off here but say 25% sales revenue went into the MT'o  coffers!!

I'm guessing you guys have seen all the various SAKs, MTs and Knives that are part of a deceased collectors estate that's currently being auctioned off on eBay?? Its taking forever
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

Not exactly sure what will happen with the collection once i'm gone. I have thought about it before, but never put any real thought into it. Its possible all will be sold off before that time comes if need be or if I decide to sell for some other reason. I would wan't to sell some of the more rare stuff to people that will really appreciate them as much as I do. Maybe a forum giveaway of a lifetime perhaps.  HAHAHA...... calm down guys......Slow your breathing.......Don't send the hit man yet.  :D In complete honesty and sincerity if I was in a situation where I knew I didn't have much time left I would give away some of my collection for free to people on the forum that I know would appreciate them.  :salute: I guess it really matters if I have kids at the time and if they show any interest in my collection. If so a vast majority would go to him/her/them to do with what they like. If they have no interest I would leave a note explaining the forum and how to go about selling them on here first. I guess it just really matters on the situation when that time comes.

There is always the option of trying to take them with me... maybe the Pharaohs had it right and I should be buried with a full compliment of multitools.

I'm not exactly terminal, but I do have a bad heart and am close to going on a transplant list. Upon my passing, instructions will be left to my wife (I have no children) to divide up my collection amongst a few lucky members of this forum. There's just no way she'd be able to sell them all and besides she'd never get back what I put into most of them...  ::)

I'm sure whomever is going to receive your tools is going to be happy to wait a very long time to get them!

I can't help you with a heart since I'm not sure I have one for myself, but if you ever need a kidney full of stones let me know!  :D

My wife will probably sell it all and buy wine. LOL.  Hopefully my sons are interested in them.  My 11 yr old liked trying to open and close the crunch, but hes not very tool interested.  The 3 yr old loves to get his hands on SAKs, i only let him try the bottle opener as a screwdriver.  He pretends hes bob the builder.
