Excellent work. I think I will have to do one of these in the future.  :tu:

Looking good mate.   You've got more knives right?

You only need 3-4 kitchen knives to cover all your basis.

Yeah I have a few others.  :P Crappy knives are handy though for when I need to cut stuff on plate, contact with metal/bone etc.

Last one for the year. I want to make a magnetic knife block to keep things more organized, since now things are all over the place with smaller knives in a block, and bigger ones that don't fit hiding under the dish drying rack.

(...)

Material/hardware is cheap, except the magnets... 1" neodymium magnets are friggin expensive, looked on ebay but couldn't find any cheap ones from China, so I ended up buying from Lee Valley, think I paid over $30 for them.

(...)

Have you tried the magnetic "strips" that are inside the rubber that line the refrigerators doors? That's what keep the doors closed, I think it might secure a knife. It might be cheaper (even free, from some junkyard or recycling site).

Then my Mom picked up the habit of using laptop on bed, so I made her a laptop stand. I used slats instead of a board thinking it would improve air circulation, and it probably does. Except I wish I had 4 more pairs of hands (and whole bunch more clamps) when I was putting it together. Trying to keep everything aligned before glue sets was an impossible task, so my meticulously calculated sizing all went down the toilet and all the slats came out crooked.

(...)

Great job(s)! Maybe you could use some thinner pieces of wood to act as spacers, keeping the same distance between the slats. When the glue is dry, you can just tap them away with a small hamer.

Maybe using something similar to these two "combs". You just need two to put over the slats and it would be easier to remove/reuse.

Nice work mate  :tu:

I look like having a bit of wood left over once I've built the two "treasure chests" I have on the go (one of which I have to get finished by Christmas  :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh)

A magnetic knife rail might be a good use of any leftovers

Not unless you have direct contact like those steel magnetic knife holder where magnet is mounted on surface and several metal strips protrude out of the block for the knives to stick to. With the thickness of wood these rare earth magnets is barely strong enough for the application.

Although if you grind down the point on the forstner bit you can reduce the wood thickness left, I didn't want to do that since this is a one off and don't want to ruin the bit for future use.

Go for it, this is actually one of the easiest projects I've done, and an excuse to buy a palm router.  :D

Build shelf with tools, so I have a place to store the tools.  :D

Now that they aren't stacked on top of each other I can access them much easier now, and a bit more floor space as bonus.

The double dado I did on the folding wall shelf was way to hard to get a precise fit with my equipments, especially since all my wood are cut down from 2x8 lumber and not standard size. So now I'm going to stick with dado on one side only.

On a side note, cordless circular saw has really came a long way, mine's not even the newest gen of brushless and 5+ AH battery, and for a hobbyist it can pretty much replace a corded version.

So, garden arbor for the bean stalk etc. It's sort of a trial run to see if the design works since I'm cutting all dados with a circular saw to let all the pieces nesting within each other, and I had to modify the plan many times along the way due to size/space constrictions. I really should've cut dados on the 4 top beams to nest the 6 thinner top pieces, but there were late design changes and I forgot.

The 4 legs turned out to be too thin and strong wind would make it swing a bit, so I've cut 4 more pieces that I'm going to glue/screw onto them to double their size. And I need to waterproof it with thompson's. That'll have to wait since it's going to rain for the next 5 days.

If it works well, I'll make a proper looking one with thicker parts and proper footing, though not sure if I should use PT wood since this does come in contact with food plants.

On a semi related note, I'm really itching for a worm drive saw. I know I don't need it since I already have a sidewinder and a cordless, plus a worm drive is heavy as hell, but there's a dewalt one available for $125, so...

Thanks. There are some seriously good woodworkers here and I don't come anywhere close, but I've had fun hacking these together.

The $125 dewalt worm drive has sold out, so I guess that's decided. :D
